Ph.D. scholarships are often more difficult to come by than undergraduate or graduate scholarship opportunities, they play a crucial role in helping doctoral students earn an advanced degree. Some schools offer stipends, pay living expenses, and promise work opportunities to Ph.D.students are required to earn a Ph.D. to pursue a career in their field of choice. Psychiatrists, postsecondary teachers, judges, and lawyers among others are just some examples of professions for which a doctorate or professional degree is the minimum education requirement for employment. As an incentive for doctoral students who may be missing out on generating income while studying, many doctoral scholarships are offered by organizations that support mental health professionals, STEM researchers, and other fields that require a Ph.D., in hopes of recruiting graduates with advanced education and relevant work experience. Many Ph.D. candidates in research and academia are required to further postpone their careers by completing a temporary postdoctoral training period before they are eligible for full-time employment.

The Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program is awarded to those interested in pursuing undergraduate program, Masters or Ph.D. in non-degree postgraduate studies. The grant covers expenses like tuition fee, textbooks, airfare, stipend, and health insurance. Annually 8,000 scholarships are awarded.

Private Institutions with Financial Aid for Ph.D. Students

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program provides for experienced professionals, a year of professional enrichment in the United States from developing countries who are World Bank members. This is a merit-based fellowship for Ph.D. in the USA.

Robert S. McNamara (RSM) Fellowship Program

A scholarship of up to $25,000 for nationals of developing country to conduct development-related Ph.D. research supervised by a host research advisor at a university, research or development institution in a World Bank member country. This Ph.D. Scholarship in the USA is granted for a 6 to 10 month period starting between April and September. It also covers travel to the host country.

Environmental Fellowship Program at Harvard University in the USA

The fellows will receive about  $65,000 per year and will also be eligible for health insurance and a maximum of  $2,500 reimbursement for travel expenses. The fellowship includes a $2,500 allowance for other professional expenses.

International Scholarship Programme, The Aga Khan Foundation

The Aga Khan fellowship is provided for two years for tuition fee and cost of living. Travel expenses are not included in the Aga Khan fellowship.  These Ph.D. scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant and 50% loan basis. The loan has to be paid back within 5 years with an annual surcharge of 5%. A guarantor is required.

Universities with Financial Aid for Ph.D. Students

Columbia University

Merit-based scholarships are offered by Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Columbia University. These are both annual as well as multi-year scholarships. The scholarships cover tuition fee, health fee as well as a stipend for living expenses. The fellowships are renewed on a yearly basis by individual departments.

Harvard University

Harvard is very high but its large endowment allows financial aid to its students. Full financial support is offered to Ph.D. students of Harvard University. This includes tuition, health fee, and basic living expenses for five years. The funding is provided through a combination of tuition grants, stipends, traineeships, teaching fellowships, research assistantships, and other appointments.

The Yale is organized into 14 constituent schools. It offers a  full tuition fellowship, hospitalization fellowship and a minimum level of stipend support of approximately $30,000 to all doctoral candidates.

The University of Pennsylvania is a private Ivy League university located in Philadelphia. The University of Pennsylvania supports its Ph.D., students by providing multi-year financial packages which cover tuition, fees, health insurance, and a stipend. Different fields of studies have different terms for aid. Merit-based awards or support in return for service are also provided by some schools at Upenn.
