GRE / GMAT /SAT and TOEFL for admissions


Depending on what course you are applying to, you would need a SAT, GMAT or GRE. TOEFL is required for all international students

Course Requirement
Undergraduate / Bachelors SAT SAT is required for doing undergraduate course/ Bachelors although some colleges accept ACT score in lieu of SAT scores.
Graduate/masters GRE If you want to do Masters or PhD, GRE will be required
MBA GRE/GMAT GMAT is required for doing MBA although some MBA colleges accept GRE scores

GMAT score requirements:

GRE GMAT SAT TOEFLGMAT score is required for MBA admission but nowadays some Institutions accept GRE scores in place of GMAT Scores. There is no fixed required score for colleges.Every college set their own score requirement. For example:

In University of Illinois, there is no minimum score requirement. They look at the entire application. They accept GRE scores in place of GMAT scores but the candidate who submits GMAT score, carries more weight than the GRE for scholarship decisions.

In University of Pittsburgh, every applicant is required to submit GMAT scores for MBA admission and it cannot be waived.The minimum score requirement is 600.

In Yale University, there is no minimum score required to apply. They accept GRE scores in place of GMAT scores for MBA admission.

GMAT scores are valid for five years after the testing year.

GRE score requirements:

GRE test is required for those applicants, who are planning to pursue graduate course, masters, MBA or Doctoral degree.The GRE revised General Test is accepted at thousands of graduate and business schools.GRE scores are valid for five years after the testing year. Minimum GRE score requirement varies from college to college. For example:

In University at Albany, GRE scores vary from department to department and year to year with the competitiveness of each class. Therefore, the Admissions Office does not issue average or minimum scores.

In Iowa State University ,  there is no cut-off score for the GRE Test. But the recommended guidelines for GRE score is a minimum of 700 (quantitative) and 3.5 or 700 (analytical).This information is based on admission requirement for engineering department.

SAT :

It is a standardized test for college admission in US. This test has 3 different section: Critical reading section, math section and writing section. Each section is scored on a scale of 200 to 800 points. The minimum score requirement varies from college to college. For example:

In University of California (Berkeley) , according to 2012-13 student profile, the required SAT score was:

  • SAT Math ( 660-770 )
  • SAT Writing (540-760)
  • SAT Reading ( 530-740)

In University of Houston, the minimum score requirement is 1500 (writing + reading + maths)  out of 2400 in total.

TOEFL :

TOEFL is a test, that is always a mandatory requirement for international students. It is required to know the proficiency of student in English language, both written and verbal. This test has four  sections, and you have to get minimum score in all four. Those four sections are:

  • Reading
  • Listening
  • Writing
  • Speaking

The score scale is 0-30 for every section. And the total score should be between 0-120.This score is valid for 2 years after the test date. You can take it as many times as you need , but remember there should be a gap of 12 days between two test dates.There is nothing like passing marks in TOEFL Test, every institution set their own score requirements. For example:

In University at Buffalo , International applicants must score a minimum of 79 on the Internet-Based TOEFL (IBT) to be considered for admission.

In University of Iowa, the minimum TOEFL score required for graduate admission is 81 while for MBA it is 100.

In Academy of Art University , there is no minimum TOEFL requirement for international students because the Academy of Art University offers ESL classes.
