The faculty works to prepare teachers with the expertise, skills, and ability to assist children and youth with disabilities to become autonomous, active, and fully integrated school and community members. The special education services aim to help the students acquire the skills necessary in various situations, including age-appropriate education settings, to educate children and youth with disabilities, including extreme disabilities. To this end, the standards for special education teachers and their associated skills were integrated into the curriculum and programs of the New York State Pedagogical Center.

Special Education services aim to assist candidates in learning the skills required in a variety of environments including age-appropriate general training environments for disabled children and youths and seriously disabled persons. For this reason, all curriculums and programs have adopted the New York State Pedagogical Core standards on teachers of special education and related skills.
