A little background, I want to pursue a higher degree, so I decided to go with New York University’s Master of Science in Computer Science and Engineering program. I’m almost done with my Bachelor’s Degree, and my cumulative GPA is pretty high. However, my undergraduate degree is not in Computer Science, so I was wondering if NYU will take this into account during admissions. Moreover, what are the standard GRE score and other general admission requirements of the University?

Every new applicant must comply with the below mentioned requirments for admission in MS in computer science at New York University:

Admission deadlines: March 1 and October 1 for Fall and Spring sessions respectively.

Letters of Recommendation: Three letters of recommendation are required from persons who are familiar with the academic qualifications of the applicant.

GRE/TOEFL: The University have not set any standard score for the submission of applications as the application assessment depends upon the many factors not only the GRE results. Moreover, for TOEFL, a minimum of 100 on internet based test is required. On the other hand, a minimum of 7 overall band score is recommended for IELTS. TOEFL and IELTS scores apply on international students only.

Transcripts: Every applicant must submit one academic transcript, mark sheet or final grades sheet from every institute attended previously along with the application.

Statement of Purpose: Applicants must also submit a statement of not longer than two double spaced pages describing the reasons for choosing the NY University and brief overview of past and present work experience, future objectives and career goals.

Furthermore, it is not mandatory to have the undergraduate degree in computer science to get admission in MS computer science, but, it is recommended that you must possess the knowledge of subjects involved in MS computer science for which you can apply separately to computer science courses.

The above requirements are not comprehensive. Each department might have additional or special requirements. Let us know in the comments below if you need any further information or visit the link of university.

Even if you don’t have a computer science bachelors degree, you still have a chance at being accepted into NYU’s graduate program in computer science. You will most likely need to take pre-requisite classes so you can be up to speed with your colleagues.

NYU’s grad program doesn’t have a minimum GRE score requirement. With the competitiveness of getting accepted, you should aim for a high score in the GRE especially for the Quantitative section.

Good question. While most colleges and universities that offer graduate programs in computer science would require you to have a bachelor’s degree or a strong background in computer science, you can be accepted into NYU’s computer science graduate program.

However, you would probably have to take pre-requisite courses prior to starting your masters degree. The general requirements are the same as other universities which include letters of recommendation, transcripts, GRE and TOEFL scores, application form and fee, and statement of purpose.

When sending in your letters of recommendation, try to see if you can get one from a faculty member where you got your bachelor’s degree. It would help for the admissions department to see how your professors viewed you as a student in university.
