I’ve already completed by Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science back in 2014. After that, I started working for a small company due to financial constraints. Now, that I’m better off, I think it’s important to get a Master’s Degree in Computer Science to further progress in my career. I’ve recently decided to quit my job so I can become a full time student in the University of Wisconsin-Madison for their MS program in computer science. I’ve already looked through their site, can you tell me if there are any more specifications relating to GRE score, letters of recommendation, and transcripts for this university?
Thanks in advance!

The University of Wisconsin-Madison‘s Computer Science department is one of the oldest and most respected. They offer internationally recognized research programs, state-of-the-art courses augmented by distinguished visiting lecturers from other universities, and industry and a stimulating learning community of high achieving students.
There is no minimum GRE score recommended by the university. As a general rule, it is better that one must have a good GRE score and the submitted GRE scores must not be older than 5 years. As a rough guideline, most of the students the university admit are in the 85th percentile or higher on each of the sections of the GRE General Test (Analytical Writing, Quantitative and Verbal) and have a GPA of 3.6 or higher (on a 4.0 scale). However, students’ may be admitted if they are below these guidelines and if their application is especially strong in other respects.
Other admission requirements are.
- Online application
- New applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognized US institute or equivalent degree from an international institute.
- An applicant must possess a minimum of 3.0 undergraduate GPA (on a 4.00 scale) or a masters degree with a minimum of cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.00).
- International applicants, whose native language is not English, are required to submit a minimum of 80 internet-based, 550 paper-based in case of TOEFL. Whereas, 77 and 6 for MELAB and IELTS respectively.
Admissions at Wisconsin are very competitive. An applicant must possess something unique in order to increase his chances of getting in. For the computer science program, it is recommended that students should have the background of computer science or at least have the knowledge of data structure and machine learning subjects.

The requirements that you have enumerated for applying to the University of Wisconsin-Madison are correct. To be more specific, you will need at least three letters of recommendation. Most universities look for letters from previous professors and companies you’ve worked with. You would also need your official transcripts and GRE or TOEFL scores. Your GPA should be at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
For the GRE, there is no minimum requirement but it’s always good to aim for the high percentile scores with a greater weight on the quantitative section. If you’re a foreign student, you may have to take the IELTS, TOEFL or MELAT. These will show your proficiency in the English language.
