Online Master’s Program in Systems Engineering
The full online master’s degree program in systems engineering explores the system’s life cycle providing the skills to manage the planning, analysis, design, development, integration, testing, implementation, operations, and maintenance of complex systems.
One of the unique functions of a systems engineer is the ability to see the big picture. This helps to integrate all aspects of the engineering process.
Systems engineering is a function with five phases:
- System studies or program planning.
- Exploratory planning to define the problem and goals – this also includes systems synthesis, systems analysis, selecting the best system, and communicating the results.
- Development planning which repeats phase 2 in more detail.
- Studies during development include developing parts of the system, integration, and testing.
- Current engineering takes place once the system is operational.

Johns Hopkins University:
- The applicant must meet the general admission requirements that pertain to all master’s degree candidates.
- Applicant prior education must include an undergraduate or graduate degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or equivalent) from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Applicant prior education must include the following prerequisites (or work experience must demonstrate equivalent competency): one year of college calculus, one year of college physics, and a course in a programming language such as Java or C++.
- If applicant prior education does not include the prerequisites listed above (or work experience does not demonstrate equivalent competency), they may still be admitted under provisional status, followed by full admission once they have completed the missing prerequisites. Missing prerequisites may be completed with Johns Hopkins Engineering (all prerequisites except Physics I and II are available) or at another regionally accredited institution. Courses applicable to fill these prerequisites should specifically relate to math, science, and engineering majors.
- When reviewing an application, the applicant’s academic and professional background will be considered.
- As part of the admission process, the chair or the program coordinators may interview the applicant for a better evaluation of the application.

University of New Mexico-Main Campus:
- The GRE scores are required and should be submitted to the University directly by ETS (Institution code: 4845; no department code is needed). During the online application process, scores must be submitted unofficially for review. The GRE scores are considered for general benchmarking purposes and are examined in the context of all other application requirements; these include the GPA, letters of recommendation, and statement of intent.
- Three Letters of Recommendation – UNM BSMEs with a GPA of 3.5 (or higher) on their last 60 credit hours of coursework have the option of submitting only two (2) letters of recommendation. The letters must be written by professional references such as instructors and supervisors, not friends and relatives. Letters should be submitted directly by the recommenders through the online system.
- Statement of Intent (or Letter of Intent) – This document must be submitted through the online application system. The presence of overlap of applicant’s interests with the expertise of one or more of the faculty members is given significant weight in terms of the application acceptance decision. So, this statement should show clear evidence of such an overlap.
- Updated CV (Resume) – This document must be submitted through the online application system.
- Official Transcripts.
- For both domestic and international applicants, admission applications must be complete by April 30 for the Summer semester of the same calendar year, by July 1 for the Fall semester of the same calendar year, and by November 1 for the Spring semester of the same calendar year.
