32 outstanding STEM students were given the prestigious NSF (National Science Foundation) fellowship for innovative and impactful research on campus. The award was given to CU Boulder students to encourage them and give recognition to their work.

The award was announced on April 9 and recognizes the outstanding achievements of graduate students in the STEM field. The award is competitive with the 2019 winners selected from thousands of applicants across the country.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is one of the most important fields to date and is projected to make innovations for the future.

CU Boulder (University of Colorado) dominated this year’s NSF awards.

“The significant number of graduate students at CU Boulder receiving these prestigious fellowships is a true testament to our high caliber students, their intellectual merit and impact of their research,” said Leslie Reynolds, interim dean of the Graduate School. “We are so proud of them and the work they are doing.”

The 2019 winners along with 14 Honorable Mentions represent a wide range of scientific disciplines from across campus, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics and more. An annual stipend of $34,000 for the next three years is awarded to each recipient plus a chance for professional development opportunities.

“We are very proud of the emerging scholars who have won the support of the National Science Foundation,” said James White, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Their research spans an array of disciplines that includes applied math, life sciences, and social sciences. These CU Buffs are future leaders whose innovations will certainly impact humanity, advance knowledge, and help make the world a better place.”

Bobby Braun, dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science continues, “These fellowship recipients have the capability, dedication and drive to positively impact society through science and engineering,” he further added “I’m excited to see how their research plans mature over their graduate careers. For our college, this is a new record of NSF Graduate Research Fellows. I’m especially proud of the diversity and breadth of this cohort in which each of our departments and graduate programs is represented.”

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency with the goal of promoting science, health, prosperity, welfare, and secure national defense. The NSF supports research to advance knowledge and transform the future.
