Admission Requirements for Graduate Programs at Duke University
PHD in Physics - GRE Optional
Admissions decisions are made by the Graduate Admissions Committee (GAC) after reviewing the entire application package which includes:
- Curriculum Vitae
- Academic performance (official transcript)
- Research experience
- Three (or more) letters of recommendation
- Statement of purpose (describing research interests)
Submission of general and/or Physics subject GRE scores is optional. Applicants who do not submit GRE scores will receive full consideration. Nonetheless, the submission of GRE scores may be advantageous in certain circumstances by providing additional information that is not conveyed by other application materials such as transcripts and letters.
Ph.D. in Chemistry - GRE Optional
To apply for the Ph.D. program in Chemistry, the following requirements must be met:
- Applicants must submit unofficial transcripts at the time of application. Upon admission, official transcripts are required.
- Three letters of recommendation are mandatory.
- Applicants should submit a well-organized and concise statement. This statement is expected to reflect the applicant's determination, resilience, and motivation for pursuing a doctoral degree in chemistry. It should also demonstrate the applicant's potential to contribute to a diverse and inclusive scholarly community.
- A current résumé is required.
- GRE General and GRE Subject test scores are optional.
- An undergraduate GPA, calculated on a 4.0 scale, is required.
Public Policy Graduate Program
If you are interested in applying to become a Ladd Fellow in Education Policy, you must indicate your interest in education policy.
The important factor is whether the grades received from courses taken at such institutions are listed on the degree-granting institution's transcript.
We require a 1-2 page resume with the online application.
Describe why you are interested in a masters degree in public policy; how your professional, academic, or personal experiences have contributed to your interest; and your professional goals upon graduation.
Require all evaluation forms and recommendation letters to be uploaded and completed online. We will not process applications until we have received all of your recommendations.
GRE score submission will be optional. Students may, if they choose, submit GRE scores for consideration in the application process, but it is not required.
If you’re applying for the MPP/JD dual degree program with Duke or UNC- Chapel Hill Law Schools, we accept the LSAT.
M.S. in Quantitative Financial Economics- GRE required.

Admission requirements, such as a completed online application, official transcripts, GRE scores, and three letters of recommendation. In addition, applicants are expected to have a strong background in computer science, mathematics, or related fields.
