MS in Telecommunications

The MS in Telecommunications degree at the George Mason University was specifically designed for students who do not have an degree in electrical engineering with a GPA above 3.0, but who would like to enter the information technology business in government, commerce, or industry positions, with a broad based understanding of telecommunications allied to specific skills in elected areas such as network, wireless, or systems engineering.

Every student is different, and we try to see the whole person rather than just considering their degree and GPA. Applicable work experience in the telecommunications industry is also valuable prospective students are encouraged to talk with the Program Director for specific advice.

A non-degree student need only submit a copy of their transcript rather than have an official transcript sent to Graduate Admissions under seal. Registering as a non-degree student is also cheaper and the results of the admissions process are known much quickly.

For a student in non-degree status, probably the best time to for admission in regular, degree seeking status is in the semester when you are taking courses that will bring your total number of credits to 9 or 12 in the MS in Telecommunications program. It is possible to for admission in regular staus during your first semster. HINT: Application for regular status requires three letters of recommendation. If you do not already have these, you should request such letters of recommendation from the instructors who teach you while you are a non-degree student.

But a non-degree student must for admission to regular, degree-seeking status.

For example, you may have been required to retake a TOEFL exam and have yet to do so.

If you have provided the requisite information in your application you have earned at least a B grade from your core courses, and your overall GPA is 3.0 or better, you should be moved to regular master status.

However, an overall GPA of 3.0, calculated from the 30 credit hours of courses, must be earned to graduate with an MS in Telecommunications.

Note that a student must maintain a GPA of 3.0 through the program to graduate.

If your GPA is above 3.0, you may take up to two TCOM courses as an elective for your degree.

Programs, on a number of factors, such as the Grade Point Average earned within their MS in Telecommunications degree program and the alignment of the MS in Telecommunications courses with the courses proposed to be taken within the higher degree. A GPA of at least 3.5 in the MS in Telecommunications program should enable a student to move on to a Ph. D.

Telecommunications (MS) - Online

The Telecommunications (Masters) program is designed for students who currently work in or wish to enter the field of telecommunications. Recent graduates and experienced professionals will benefit from the tools and knowledge gained through this program. Concentrating on practical applications rather than theoretical approaches, the curriculum blends cutting-edge, engineering-oriented courses in communication networks and protocols, network applications and security, and wireless and fiber-optic communications with courses in systems engineering, legal, and policy aspects of modern communications systems.

This program has an application deadline of March 15 for Fall and October 15 for Spring. The application deadline for non-degree students is August 15 for Fall and January 4 for Spring.

Students can pursue one of three graduate certificates as part of your degree program to demonstrate an area of specialization to employers, including the fully online Advanced Networking Protocols for Telecommunications or hybrid online Wireless Communications programs.

The Master of Science in Telecommunications at George Mason University provides a technically rigorous, interdisciplinary blend of graduate level courses in communications systems and networks, augmented with exposure to telecommunications policy, law, and business.

The innovative, interdisciplinary MS in Telecommunications program provides a blend of cutting-edge engineering-oriented courses in wireless and fiber communications systems, networks, computers, and Internet protocols, combined with courses on telecommunications policy, legal, business, and international aspects. The interdisciplinary program is designed for students who wish to enter the field of telecommunications or are working in the field and want to advance their knowledge of telecommunications. It concentrates on practical applications of telecommunications rather than on a theoretical approach, and focuses on the engineering and IT aspects of telecommunications, in combination with the interdisciplinary knowledge offered by selected courses in telecommunications business and policy. than 30 new engineering and IT courses have been designed especially for this program, including four certificate programs that may be incorporated into, and taken concurrently with, the MS in telecommunications.

A novelty of the program is its structure, which consists of four emphasis areas. This structure allows students to identify clearly the various specialties in telecommunications technology. Students enjoy considerable flexibility because they are able to design their master programs to fit their technical preferences, including the option of taking courses in other programs at Mason. A majority of the course material comes from the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department and the Systems Engineering and Operations Research (SEOR) Department. Courses offered by ECE focus on network technologies, such as fiber optics, and Internet protocols network applications, such as networked multicomputer systems, client-server architectures, and network management and wireless communications, such as digital communications, satellite communications, mobile communications, and GPS. Unique courses in the telecommunications program, such as Border Gateway Protocols, Interior Gateway Protocols, MPLS, GPS, and Advanced Link Design, complement courses given in ECE programs. In addition to the many new telecommunications courses developed for this program, ECE already offers a number of other graduate courses in communications as part of the graduate electrical engineering and computer engineering programs.
