George Mason University offers a Master of Science in Computational Science program that addresses the increasing demand for trained computational scientists, engineers, and data scientists. The program provides a robust foundation in computational science skills while also including courses in various scientific and engineering computer-intensive areas, where modeling and simulation, data analysis, and high-performance computing play a critical role. With guidance from an advisor, students can choose to pursue an area of emphasis in either Computer Modeling and Simulation or Data Science. The former is intended for students who want to acquire computational solution techniques for modeling and simulating scientific and engineering phenomena, while the latter is for those who wish to learn computational methods for obtaining, extracting, and analyzing large-scale data obtained by observations, experiments, modeling, and database searches. Students can also combine areas of emphasis to create a customized curriculum based on their interests and goals under the supervision of the graduate coordinator. The program is 30 credits long, comprising 6 credits of core courses, 15 credits of computational extended core courses, and 9 credits of electives.

What we liked: This is a 30-credit Master of Science in Computational Science that offers two areas of emphasis namely, Computer Modelling and Simulation and Data Science. Students can also combine areas of emphasis to create their own customized curriculum under the guidance of the graduate coordinator. The curriculum combines a solid foundation in computational science skills with courses in a variety of scientific and engineering computer-intensive areas.

Financial Aid: Apart from federal financial aid through FAFSA, this university provides Assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships.

Cost: With a cost per credit of $559, and a total tuition of $16,770, this program is affordably priced when compared to similar master's programs. However, the tuition for out-of-state students is expensively priced at $44,220.

Prerequisites: Applicants should have academic backgrounds in the following appropriate fields: physical or biological sciences, engineering, mathematics, or computer science. Applicants should have taken at least one course in differential equations and have the facility in using a high-level computer programming language.
