The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics studies the distribution and patterns of health events and provides statistical methodology on topics in human health. These two fields of study are the cornerstone of public health research and practice that provide students with the foundation for a variety of promising careers in academia, industry, and government.

Our distinguished faculty conducts excellent research on a broad range of health outcomes and exposures and is fully committed to helping students become leaders in the field. As a department, our funded research projects and publications are extensive, covering topics from social, structural, and economic influences of HIV risk in young South African women to inquiries into whether walking pace may predict the risks of cognitive decline and dementia in elderly populations.
