The Master of Science in Exercise Science Program at Northeastern University offers a unique focus in Physical Activity and Public Health. This program is designed to prepare professionals trained in both exercise science and public health, specifically in health promotion and chronic disease prevention.

The Health Sciences currently offers a Master of Science in Exercise Science with a public health emphasis. The concentration in physical activity and public health recognizes that inactivity is a major public health problem and represents a significant risk factor for many chronic diseases including heart disease, stroke, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer. This program integrates key competencies for a degree in exercise science recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), including knowledge of exercise physiology and the assessment and development of physical activity and exercise programs for the general and clinical populations.

The program offers three pathways of study: research, public health, and practice-based pathways. These pathways train students to pursue a terminal degree in exercise science or to pursue opportunities in research and clinical settings, or within federal, private, and nonprofit institutions.

We offer students internship, practicum, and research opportunities at both on and off-campus sites. The exercise science program provides its students with a dedicated on-site laboratory that is equipped with state-of-the-art technology that is ideal for applying coursework, honing practical skills, and conducting research. Experiential education is a key component of the program, because application of classroom knowledge provides valuable preparation for a career in exercise science.

Students chose one of three pathways: research, public health, practice-based exercise science.

The Health Sciences at Northeastern University offers a combined Master in Public Health (MPH)-Master of Science in Exercise Science (EXSC) program. This dual degree program allows qualified students to achieve their goal of obtaining a robust understanding of public health through an MPH degree while also completing their MS in Exercise Science. Coursework consists of advanced physiology such as musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary systems and the assessment and prescription of exercise and physical activity in the context of the social determinants of health. Graduates of the program will benefit from having a greater understanding of public health issues in the fields of exercise and physical activity in order to better design exercise prescription programs in the healthcare industry that aim to improve the health of individuals and communities.

The MS Exercise Science MPH Program is a professional (non-thesis) master’s dual degree program offered by the Bouvé College of Health Sciences Health Sciences. All MS MPH degree candidates must complete a total of 54 credits consisting of:.

Physical Activity and Exercise: Prescription, Measurement, and Testing.

As a culminating experience, students are required to complete a capstone project that is health education programming planning-oriented and integrates an experiential clinical exercise science component. Capstone Projects are student led and designed in consultation with community partners. Students participate in a Capstone Seminar intended to support the integration of their practice and analytic experiences.
