Rice University GRE score and admission requirements for graduate programs in Computer Science, Information Systems and Information Technology

For 2022 admissions, Rice generally is not requiring the GRE. However, individual degree programs have the option of recommending, strongly recommending, or requiring the general GRE. See the Programs of Study page or reach out to their program of admission for clarification.

Applications open on or around September 1 for admission the following year. The application can be accessed at gradapply.rice.edu.

For fall admission, most program deadlines occur in the preceding December or January.

Due to the Coronavirus, TOEFL and GRE test administrations has been delayed in some or all locations. Updates on TOEFL can be found here, GRE here. The university want the university admitted applicants to know that the university will make every effort to facilitate their successful arrival in the United States.

All official transcripts must be sent directly to the program to which applicant intend to apply.

Applicants from Chinese institutions can request and submit official transcripts directly through CHESICC. If submitting through CHESICC applicant will not need to submit a paper copy of their transcript.

For 2022, Rice will waive application fees for doctoral applicants who are graduates of institutions in Texas and bordering states Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico or who have a permanent address in these states.

Applicants are able to replace time-sensitive documents directly through the application portal. Applicants are also able to add recommenders to their application even after the application has been submitted.

The pandemic has made it difficult for some students to take the GRE. Rice Graduate Studies is not requiring the GRE for Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 admission, but will provide students with the option of submitting those scores. However, individual Rice degree programs will recommend, strongly recommend, or require the general GRE for Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 admission.

General GRE is recommended but not required: MEML, MMSNE, MSPE, MStat, MS in Bioscience and Health Policy, in Materials Science and Nanoengineering, and in Space Studies PhD in Materials Science and NanoEngineering.

General GRE is strongly recommended but not required: MCEE, MME, MS in Environmental Analysis, and in Mechanical Engineering PhD in Chemistry, in Civil Engineering, in Environmental Engineering, in Political Science, and in Statistics.

The GRE and TOEFL tests are administered by the Educational Testing Service. For IELTS, scores can be reported directly to Rice using the name Rice University Graduate Admissions.

Rice does not accept TOEFL MyBest Scores .

E.g., for the GRE, it is five years from their test date. For the TOEFL, it is two years.

Please use the university online letters of recommendation which can be submitted within the application itself. If their application is sent without or one of their recommenders declines to provide a recommendation, applicant can log back into the application and add a new recommender.

Applicants are able to use Interfolio to send letters of recommendation.

Applicant can log back on to the application and resend their letter of recommendation. The coordinator or administrator in that program can assist applicant with recommendation letters.

This resolution states that for doctoral applicants, the deadline to accept an offer of admission and is April 15. No doctoral offer or other offer of can require an applicant respond to an offer before this date.
