Ph.D. Kinesiology Requirements

Michigan Kinesiology offers two master’s degrees and two doctoral degrees. Due to the vast amount of resources available at the University of Michigan, Kinesiology graduate students can take advantage of opportunities for unique interdisciplinary and dual graduate degrees.

All of these programs are ranked in the top 10 nationally by U.S. News and World Report.

All of our doctoral students receive full support at the outset and it continues for four years based upon satisfactory performance. Research and endowed fellowships, teaching assistantships, health care benefits, Federal Work-Study, and Federal Stafford Loans are a few of the ways that master’s and doctoral students are funded. Travel funds are available to Kinesiology doctoral students to participate in professional meetings and conferences, and summer support is also available for doctoral students who are engaged in quality research.

The Master of Science in Movement Science program examines and explores human movement from a variety of perspectives. These interests may include injury prevention and rehabilitation, sport medicine, biomechanics, exercise physiology, pedagogy, and or motor control and development. As a student in this program, you'll have the flexibility of creating a custom tailored program of study. You may have the opportunity to participate in research. A thesis option is also available in this program.

The Master of Science in Sport Management program is particularly suitable if you wish to work in the business of sport and manage elements of the sport enterprise. Through academic and hands-on experiences, you'll develop a solid background in the areas of leadership, management, marketing, law, economics, and finance. As a student in this program, you'll follow a clearly defined program of study. You may have the opportunity to complete sport industry internships and participate in related research. A thesis option is also available in this program.

Master of Human Movement Exercise Science

Students who receive a Master of Science in Movement Science study human movement in depth from different perspectives. In addition to coursework, our program provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable and relevant research experience focused on topics such as obesity, diabetes, mechanisms and prevention of joint injury, concussion, movement-based rehabilitation, and learning and adaptation of motor behavior across the lifespan. Graduate training often involves collaborations with other units on campus including engineering, psychology, public health and medicine. An important aspect of our program is the flexibility in course selection and research areas which allow students to tailor their program of study to fit individual interests. Graduates are well-prepared to pursue doctoral research studies, professional health care programs including medicine and rehabilitation, health and wellness, as well as positions in the private and public sector.

All Ph.D. students in the School of Kinesiology are considered for funding there is no separate application. The typical funding package includes a minimum of four years of funding, contingent on successful academic performance, teaching evaluations and progress toward your degree. This support includes tuition and stipend for four fall and four winter terms and year-round health benefits. Funding also includes a stipend for one summer term. The funding may come in the form of a graduate student instructor assistantship, a graduate research assistantship or fellowship. Additional funding may be available.
