M.S. in Criminal Justice

psychology

Criminology and Criminal Justice stand out as one of the most rapidly growing disciplines within higher education today, fueled by growing public concerns regarding crime and the significant expansion of the criminal justice system over recent decades. This surge in interest has led to the proliferation of courses within this field at colleges nationwide. Notably, the discipline has evolved to introduce entirely new job roles that did not exist merely two decades ago, such as victim advocates and police computer mapping specialists. This dynamic landscape underscores the escalating demand for individuals equipped with graduate-level education across all sectors of the criminal justice system.

The Master of Science in Criminal Justice program at the University of North Florida (UNF) offers a unique opportunity for advanced academic exploration in this continually expanding field of study. The curriculum mandates the completion of a 33-credit and mandatory thesis, thus fostering rigorous academic growth.

Criminal justice, as a discipline, serves as a nexus, integrating diverse fields encompassing the social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences, mathematical and computer sciences, history, law, and jurisprudence. It assumes the role of a societal guardian, seeking to address and grapple with the multifaceted issue of crime in society. The graduate program at UNF extends beyond traditional boundaries, capitalizing on the interdisciplinary essence inherent in this field.

Moreover, the UNF program holds a fundamental concern for the intricate interplay between theory, practice, and research, built on the steadfast belief that these components are inextricably linked. Effective practice hinges on a robust foundation in theory and research, while, conversely, theory and research are continually shaped by the practical realities encountered in the field. Central to this program is the emphasis on cultivating professional competencies, enabling students to remain at the forefront of research and developments within the field long after they have concluded their formal studies.
