At the University of Pennsylvania, although the Graduate Group does not have a Master's program in Psychology, a student who has successfully completed the first year program, and 8 c.u.'s, may apply for an M.A. Degree. The paper associated with a 699 is viewed by the Graduate Group as being similar to a Master’s Thesis. Students taking the 698 (Rotation) would be expected to write a research paper based on one of the rotation projects to be considered for a M.A.
The Graduate Group in Psychology is highly distinguished and represents a broad range of work in psychology and includes an APA-approved clinical program. Two regular faculty and two emeritus professors are members of the National Academy of Sciences, and three regular faculty are Fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The Department also includes past presidents of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Judgment and Decision Making, and of the Linguistics Society of America. Many other faculty, graduate students, and former students have received national awards for excellence in research and teaching. We have strong connections with other disciplines at the University. Our members play pivotal roles in two of the most important interdisciplinary areas on campus, the cognitive sciences and the neurosciences, both of which have been fostered by the Department as a matter of policy.
Joint Doctoral Degree in Marketing and Psychology
The Joint Doctoral Degree in Marketing and Psychology is a program offered between the Marketing Department in Wharton and the Psychology Department in the School of Arts and Sciences. The aim of the program is to build on shared research interests between the two groups, improve students’ learning, and expand career opportunities after graduation.
This degree provides a unique opportunity for students to gain rigorous training across two departments and have a competitive advantage on the job market. For consumer researchers, psychology is one of the foundational disciplines that comprise the field of marketing. For psychologists, the marketplace is filled with questions and insights human cognition and behavior. Thus, for students with a background in either discipline, the joint degree is a way to systematically become an expert in the intersection of these fields.
If admitted to either department, the student will then have the option to for the joint degree.
3 CU of Supervised Research in Psychology (PSYC 699) taken in 2 consecutive semesters (1 CU in one semester and 2 in the other).
