Graduate Studies

law

The program begins in the fall and students cannot commence their studies during the spring semester.

Virginia Law does not offer a long-distance learning program, nor does it offer online courses.

Virginia Law receives several hundred applications each year for a class of 50 students.

The Law School Department Code is 03.

No, unless the applicant is a graduate of a U.S. or Canadian law school.

Virginia Law follows a rolling admissions policy, so offers of admission may be made before February 1, and there is some advantage in applying early. Admissions decisions continue through April.

Demonstrated excellence in prior law study is essential.

A limited amount of financial assistance is available from the Law School. If you do receive a financial aid grant, it will not cover your tuition and living expenses. Generally, our financial aid grants, when given, cover less than one-third of the cost of tuition.

Admissions decisions are made without regard to requests for financial assistance. Financial aid decisions are based on need and merit. Awards are generally made only after an applicant has been offered admission and has expressed continued, strong interest in attending Virginia Law.

International students at the University of Virginia are subject to U.S. land Security (DHS) regulations. Prospective non-immigrant students applying to enter this institution from abroad, or who are already in the U.S.A., are personally responsible for complying with DHS regulations. University policy states: To enroll at the University a foreign national student must be lawfully present in the United States based on U.S. federal immigration law and any visa status held must not prohibit the desired University enrollment. Most international students attending the University of Virginia use either the F-1 or J-1 visa.

Evidence of financial capability in support of a visa application will be requested only after an offer of admission is made to the applicant. Most students apply for an F-1 visa stamp at a U.S. consulate abroad. In general, only after receiving an F-1 visa stamp may these students apply to enter the U.S. in F-1 status.

J.D. Admissions

To be eligible for consideration for admission to the J.D. program, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by August of the year you intend to enroll. To apply for admission, candidates should submit a completed application for admission; the $80 application fee; a transcript of undergraduate and any graduate work submitted through the Credential Assembly Service (CAS); a valid, reportable score on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), or the GRE General Test; and two letters of recommendation. All required materials must be in the file before it is referred to our Admissions Committee.

Regular application deadline: Applicants should ensure that we have received a completed application by March 3. A decision will be released by April 15. Late applications will be accepted and reviewed, but applicants are not guaranteed an admissions decision by April 15.

We read every application carefully, and take all factors into account. At no point in our deliberations are numbers employed in a way that would trigger an automatic decision to offer or deny admission.

The GRE and GMAT are both offered on a daily or weekly basis throughout the year at designated testing centers. Whether you take the LSAT, the GMAT or the GRE General Test, you should understand that we review applications on a rolling basis starting in September. We will have already made a substantial portion of our offers by the time January, February or March test scores are received. As a result, applying with test scores earned in January, February or March of the year you apply to law school may reduce your chances for admission.

Applicants must provide two letters of recommendation. Letters should evaluate your potential as a law student, so letters of recommendation from members of your college or graduate school faculty who can discuss your academic performance are particularly helpful.

Include with your application a personal statement that will give the Admissions Committee any information you believe relevant to the admissions decision that is not elicited elsewhere in the application.

Alternative Private Loan Programs

Many private lending institutions offer credit-based loan programs to students. Students should carefully consider the interest rates, loan fees and terms of the program before making a selection. Most institutions have an application followed by a credit check. Once the school is notified, the school will certify the loan amount. The student most likely will then be required to complete either an or paper promissory note. Some lenders may require a credit-worthy co-signer who is a U.S. citizen.

Please be aware that private loans do not qualify for most loan repayment assistance programs, nor do they qualify for most loan forgiveness programs. UVA Law requires that all students seeking a private loan complete a loan counseling session with the financial aid office.
