Psychology is the scientific study of the mind, the brain, and human behavior. The Psychology department offers course work and research opportunities in the fields of clinical, cognitive, developmental, neuroscientific, and social psychology. By studying psychology, students better understand human behavior, including who we are, how we do the things we do, and how we enhance our lives and society. The Psychology major provides a foundation for careers in education and research law medicine and public health politics and public policy and in business fields such as marketing, finance, and management.
Courses in the department are organized so that they are best taken in several parallel sequences. Courses numbered from 120 to 190 and ending in a zero are core survey courses that introduce students to major areas of psychology and provide additional background for advanced courses. These courses represent major content areas of psychology students should sample broadly from them before specializing. Courses numbered from 200 to 209 focus on statistics. Courses numbered from 210 to 299 teach general methodology or data collection in various areas of psychology. Courses numbered from 300 to 399 are advanced courses in a particular specialization. Senior seminars, whose enrollment is limited to twenty students, are numbered from 400 to 489. These seminars are best taken once a student has appropriate background. Courses numbered from 490 to 499 are special tutorial courses that require permission of the adviser and the director of studies.
PSYC 110, a general survey course, is prerequisite to several 100-level and all 200-level and above courses. This prerequisite may alternatively be satisfied by a score of 5 on the Psychology Advanced Placement test or a score of 7 on the IB Psychology exam.
The standard major in Psychology for both the B.A. degree program and the B.S. degree program requires twelve term courses beyond PSYC 110, including the senior requirement.
Because psychology is so diverse a subject, every student is required to take four courses from the list below. Two of these courses must be from the social science point of view in psychology and two must be from the natural science point of view. At least one from each group must be a course designated as Core in the course listings. Students are expected to take their two core courses as early as possible in the major, normally within two terms after declaring their major.
The primary goal of graduate education in psychology at Yale University is the training of researchers, for academic and applied settings, who will broaden and deepen the knowledge base on which the science of psychology rests. The graduate program in the Department of Psychology annually enrolls about 15 new Ph.D. students. When applying to the Department, each potential graduate student indicates one of five areas of concentration, and usually has a “home” in a particular lab, but it is also possible to collaborate with faculty and students in other labs and participate in programs that cut across these traditional areas (e.g., cognitive, affective and social neuroscience; health sciences). The Department has an illustrious history, but, more important, continues to reinvigorate itself by recruiting the most outstanding scholars we can identify in clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience, and social-personality psychology, with special efforts to attract those whose interests bridge these areas. These scholars include faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduates in Psychology and other programs (e.g., the School of Management, Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program). A primary objective of our graduate program is to encourage research that follows from an understanding of the substantive and methodological bases of scientific psychology as well as from other social and biological sciences. We encourage students to appreciate the multiple historical and theoretical contexts from which the field has emerged, and to create an environment that facilitates student and faculty interest and participation in research activities. Moreover, many members of the faculty are committed to exploring the impact of their work on individual, community, and societal problems. Consequently, faculty and student interests and research often bridge basic science to issues of public policy, providing opportunities for students to develop broad areas of expertise. We are deeply committed to graduate education and are eager to work closely with students to help them take advantage of the rich offerings of our Department and University in ways that suit their interests and talents. The relatively small size of our graduate program and the large number of primary and affiliated faculty ensure that each student receives extensive attention in following an individualized curriculum. Applying for Admission Completed applications should be received at Yale by Dec. 1st. An official record of Verbal and Quantitative scores on the GRE Aptitude Test is required as part of the application [NOTE: the GRE Subject Test is not required], and three letters of recommendation. An official grade transcript is neither required nor necessary for the review of your application. A record of your academic performance (“unofficial transcript”) is required and should be “uploaded” to your on-line application. Students also are encouraged to submit samples of their research work. It is especially advisable to begin the application process early, and to take particular notice of the dates for administration of the Graduate Record Examination at or near the applicant’s institution or home. A common problem in reviewing applications is that some are incomplete in some respect at the time the review begins and are therefore temporarily set aside. If these applications remain incomplete, they may never be reviewed by the departmental admissions committee. Accordingly, it is important to allow sufficient time for the independent information (transcripts, letters, GRE scores) to arrive at Yale in time to be processed. Applicants cannot apply to work with faculty who are not listed as primary faculty in the department. Because of the emphasis on close contact with faculty members in research, as well as effective student participation in small class groups, only about fifteen new students out of about seven hundred applicants can be admitted each year. Applicants should realize that the total number of applicants is many times larger than the number that can be admitted, so the competition for admission is very keen. Potential applicants for the Clinical Psychology program should be advised that admission to that program is especially competitive and that in recent years only about four out of approximately three hundred sixty applicants have gained admission to the program. A fine academic record, strong GRE scores, and evidence of research experience and potential are weighed together in the admission decision process.
