STONY BROOK, NY, October 28, 2013 Stony Brook University (SBU) Center for Inclusive Education (CIE) in the Graduate School and the U.S. Energy Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) have received a $1.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation to increase the competitiveness of underrepresented minority (URM) PhD students and postdoctoral trainees who are US citizens advancing into STEM careers. As part of a broader, campus-wide strategy of complementary efforts to support and enhance bilateral relationships between the University of Michigan and Minority Serving Institution (MSIs), the Rackham Graduate School will offer three (3) MSI Collaboration and Implementation Grants for the 2019–2020 grant cycle.

Project Description: The Innovations in Graduate Education program is designed to encourage the development and implementation of bold, new, and potentially transformative approaches to STEM graduate education training. With the dual qualification of rigorous scientific research and clinical practice, graduates will be equipped with the skills to develop research programs that accelerate the translation of research advances to the understanding, detection, treatment and prevention of human disease, and to lead the advancement of biomedical research. Building upon the success of that process, and with the desire to increase the breadth of quality proposals, the Committee is issuing a new call for proposals for one $100,000 grant that can help reverse global warming. The Foundation intends to award one $100,000 grant to the organization with the best proposal, to fund work during the 2020 calendar year. To this end, HBCU-UP provides awards to develop, implement, and study evidence-based innovative models and approaches for improving the preparation and success of HBCU students so that they may pursue STEM graduate programs and or careers.

Grant Foundation to construct a comprehensive state-by-state data set of performance-based funding policies across the nation. While some policies provide incentives to institutions that admit and graduate low-income and minority students, some public colleges and universities have been found to admit fewer underrepresented students in response to PBF. If applicant know certain types of students have been found to be less likely to graduate, applicant may alter their admissions practices to only recruit the types of students whom applicant deem likely to graduate, Ortagus said. Ortagus also said that these equity problems aren’t restricted to the student level, noting that minority-serving institutions are negatively impacted by the implementation of PBF policies. The IHE-led research team, assisted by two graduate assistants and an advisory board of education policy and PBF experts, will address the knowledge gap associated with PBF and provide policymakers with the nuanced evidence needed to make informed decisions whether PBF policies exacerbate or reduce inequality for underrepresented and disadvantaged students.

Chartier, Ph.D., M.S.W., was awarded a 5-year K01 career development grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism for Ethnicity and Alcohol Dependence: Phenotypes, Genes, and the Social Environment.
