The Africana Studies Ph.D. program is a small and high quality program designed to expand knowledge production about peoples of African descent and to train future generations of scholars who will deepen and refine the field.

An interdisciplinary field of study, Africana Studies embraces the study of people of African ancestry on the African continent and in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America and the broader diaspora. Toward that end, it is at the forefront of scholarship that both transcends disciplinary fields and brings more powerful explanatory value to issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality. Accordingly, since its inception, Africana Studies has profoundly shaped research and discourse in the humanities and social sciences by altering traditional epistemologies and methodologies. Africana Studies has historically resisted the confines of national borders in its analyses.

Indeed, the diversity of the Cornell University's college system, its strengths in the traditional disciplines and its strong support and encouragement of interdisciplinary work provides students an ideal environment in which to pursue graduate training in this field. Moreover, Cornell now has a critical mass of scholars in the Humanities, Visual and Expressive Culture and Social Sciences whose work collectively sits on the cutting edge of Africana Studies.

The series culminated in devoting the entire Summer Fall 2014 issue of Scholar Feminist Online to the examination of Shange works.

Shange was on campus most recently in September to inaugurate the Lewis-Ezekoye Distinguished Lecture in Africana Studies.

The Journalism and Africana Studies Joint M.A. at the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) is a 42 credit program (22 Journalism credits including a 1-credit internship and 1-credit directed reading for the Master’s project and 20 Africana Studies credits). Course requirements in Journalism are: Writing, Research and Reporting Workshop I, JOUR-GA 1021; Writing, Research and Reporting Workshop II, JOUR-GA 1022; three Journalism electives (at least two reporting-oriented); a 1-credit internship, JOUR-GA 1290; and a Master’s thesis completed while enrolled in Directed Reading, JOUR-GA 1299. Course requirements in Africana Studies are: Pro-Seminar I, AFRS-GA 2000 and four Africana Studies electives.

The M.A. degree in Pan African Studies is a 30-credit program offering students a comprehensive understanding of the global African experience. This interdisciplinary program is structured around four core courses, two electives, an external site experience and a thesis.Courses explore the Pan African experience as reflected in multiple historical, social, and political contexts, most notably in Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States. With the approval of the Graduate Committee, students may participate in the Scholar Exchange Program, a cooperative relationship with the University of Rochester and Cornell University.

This innovative program is distinct from any other of its kind. It has a unique experiential component that requires a residency at an external site at which the department either runs a Syracuse University Abroad (SU Abroad) program, or has established an institutional affiliation. This experience offers students alternative academic exposure while confronting them with the challenge of merging theory and practice as they learn to operationalize Pan African Studies in the larger world.

The Allen Isaacman Prize in African Studies, offered jointly by the History and the Black Studies Program, awards $5,000 to a student who intends to pursue African Studies on a doctoral level.

Africana Studies at Brooklyn College is a multi- and an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that shifts the traditional paradigm by including people of the African diaspora as agents in the development of a worldview. The courses show the diverse perspectives on the human experience in areas of the Humanities and the Social Sciences with a focus on Africa, the Caribbean, the United States, as well as other areas of the African Diaspora. Through the development of critical thinking, analysis, research, contextualization, and communication, students broaden their perspectives by building knowledge of and respect for the people and issues in the African diaspora and reaffirms the value of all cultures.

The students are mentored and encouraged to engage in research and creative activities during their course of study. The major also serves as a bridge between Brooklyn College and the diasporan community of New York through research and sponsored programs. Africana Studies alumni work in a broad range of fields including academia, the arts, politics, medicine, and state and municipal governmental agencies, as well as international non-profits and social justice organizations and are well equipped for the 21st-century workplace or for graduate study at universities and professional schools.
