Communication majors strive to master verbal, written, and visual communication skills valued in multiple careers including public relations, journalism, marketing, advertising, sales, and business. Students develop the tools necessary to create messages for diverse audiences and critically analyze media messages.

Focused on visual communication and creative thinking, the Digital Media Arts major helps students learn and apply those skills across a variety of computer-assisted media. Students strive to master professional-level software used for graphic design, photography, video editing, and related fields.

The graduate program in design with a concentration in visual communications is oriented toward individuals interested in pursuing a career in design education and or furthering their professional practices, in conducting visual or theoretical research, and in investigating the intersections of function and expression in design problem solving.

VCU Graduate Bulletin, VCU Graduate School and general academic policies and regulations for all graduate students in all graduate programs.

A graduate student admitted to a program or concentration requiring a final research project, work of art, thesis or dissertation, must qualify for continuing master’s or doctoral status according to the degree candidacy requirements of the student’s graduate program.

As graduate students approach the end of their academic programs and the final semester of matriculation, they must make formal application to graduate. No degrees will be conferred until the application to graduate has been finalized.

Under special circumstances, these requirements may be waived.

In addition to general VCU Graduate School graduation requirements, the M.F.A. is an intensive two-year, 60 credit-hour full-time program with courses only scheduled during the day. Courses are often integrated with each other during the semester.
