Social Students and the Arts: Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum in the Elementary School.
This course is designed to help students examine historical interpretation with critical analysis through history and the arts. It explores different areas of content and instructional methods directly related to Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in social studies, literature, and the arts.
This course is designed to offer preservice teachers theoretical and practical knowledge and experience into teaching literacy to elementary age students. Emphasis will be placed on the social, political, and cultural context of reading instruction. Students will gain understanding of major theoretical perspectives on literacy development and the myriad strategies for teaching reading in a variety of contexts. Students will also be expected to spend time in a context where they can gain experiences in providing reading instruction in a relevant and productive way.
This course is designed to increase confidence, enthusiasm, and knowledge for teaching elementary science. Science can be an essential part of an elementary classroom not only to achieve key science learning goals, but also as a means to engage and motivate students as well as support literacy and mathematics learning. An overarching focus of the course is on the idea that science is a practice that includes specific ways of reasoning, communicating, and acting. The course is also designed in partnership with the afterschool program at Gardner Pilot Academy in BPS.
Examines the role of situational, school, community, peer, and family factors on the education of children. Participants in the course will strive to understand the effects of their own social context on their education, to develop strategies to help students understand their context, and to understand and contribute to what schools can do to improve teaching and learning and school culture for all students regardless of internal and external variables.
Deals with the practical aspects of the instruction of teaching English Language Learners in Sheltered English Immersion, and mainstream classrooms. Reviews and applies literacy and content area instructional approaches. Includes such other topics as history and legislation related to English Language Learners and bilingual education, and the influences of language and culture on students, instruction, curriculum, and assessment. There are two sections of this course: one for elementary and early childhood education majors and one for secondary education majors.
The course will coincide with the pre-practicum experience. It is designed to introduce teacher candidates to inquiry as stance and the skills necessary to conduct classroom-based research that leads to pupil achievement and teaching for social justice. The primary goal of this capstone seminar is to initiate teacher candidates into the practice of teacher research or collaborative inquiry for action. Collaborative Inquiry for Action is an ongoing, collaborative process of systematic and self-critical inquiry by educators their own schools and classrooms in order to increase teachers' knowledge, improve students' learning, and contribute to social justice. Courses in literacy, science, math, social studies, arts, inclusive schooling, and . Some courses are delivered online, and face-to-face classes have some online components. (Sheltered English may be waived with documented state-approved SEI endorsement, reducing total program credits by four.).
Field experience includes a pre-practicum experience and practicum student teaching.
On Campus: Part time (fall start): 3-7 credits semester for 7 semesters. Complete in 2.5 years. Full time (fall start): 6-9 credits semester for 5 semesters. Complete in just under 2 years. Off Campus: Part-time only (spring start): 3-7 credits semester for 7 semesters. Complete in just over 2 years. Teacher Residency: Full time only: 12-15 credits semester for 3 semesters. Complete in just over 1 year.
During your program, you'll be part of an advising team.
Our on-campus programs are offered in a combination of face-to-face, remote synchronous via Zoom, or asynchronous online courses.
In our off-campus programs, you'll study with the same cohort of students one weekend a month in eight-week semesters, and earn your degree in two years. And due to pandemic circumstances, our off-campus programs, usually held at in-person sites, have shifted to remote synchronous. This means you can join via Zoom from wherever you are. Classes will be at specified times (synchronous), so you must attend virtual classes during the scheduled class time.
A new cohort for this program will start in Spring of 2023.
In this program format, you participate full-time in the life of the school, and take classes at both the school site and Lesley. Sites vary as to online coursework offered in the program.

I direct the Lesley University WonderLab, a research and practice incubator for urban greenspace education. My primary goal in life is to help others establish and nurture connections to the natural world, and help mobilize actions that lead to local and global sustainability. I play and practice sustainable living in my urban-ish farmstead through gardening, chickens and pollinator meadowscaping for biodiversity.
My scholarly and practice-based research focuses on science and engagement through Critical Exploration. As the daughter of a concentration camp survivor and the mother of an African American teen, I am committed to understanding the impact and responsibility of my white privilege, and contributing to a just and equitable education and future for ALL.
I teach STEAM content pedagogy courses to candidates seeking an early childhood or elementary license, as well as those seeking a middle school or high school science license.
My other work includes ongoing support of equitable education initiatives in Ethiopia. Teacher candidates in my STEAM methods classes research write and illustrate culturally relevant science stories and lessons helping students understand how poverty and access to education impact learning. Thanks to a generous grant from Lesley University, I traveled to Ethiopia in 2016 to train Ethiopian educators and librarians as part of the Ethiopia Reads Book Centered Learning Committee. Through a partnership with WEEMA, the science stories written and illustrated by Lesley students are translated into three languages and distributed through WEEMA and Ethiopia Reads libraries. this project.
I also consult with schools to integrate nature-based education into the curriculum and schoolgrounds, providing professional development, curriculum design and strategic planning.

The Elementary Education major will prepare you for initial licensure as a teacher of children in a public school classroom, grades 1 through 6. The program of study is based on a broad liberal arts foundation and an integrated professional teacher preparation program. A course waiver process is available for transfer students where appropriate. Fieldwork accompanies most education courses and is a necessary component of the program. Student pre-practicum experiences include a wide variety of field settings. Students attend different and varied schools in urban, rural, and suburban settings. You will vary your placements and grade levels indifferent school buildings within districts to ensure a well rounded experience.
Preparation for the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) is embedded in the program at various stages and must be passed to obtain the initial license.

Our Professional Development Schools (PDS) partnerships are collaborative endeavors between 8 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 2 high schools in Worcester, Massachusetts and Worcester State University. The stakeholders in the partnerships share a commitment to enhancing education and student achievement in the region through quality teacher education, in-service teacher training, shared inquiry, and innovative methodologies. Worcester State University established its first PDS partnership with Chandler Magnet School in 1995 and the partnerships have evolved and expanded to include 12 schools in the Worcester Public Schools. These partnerships were developed based on recommendations from the Holmes Group, a consortium of teacher preparation universities, in 1995 and now follow guidelines established by the National Association of Professional Development Schools.
