The option is designed to provide training in school psychology in preparation for subsequent admission to the Specialist in School Psychology (S.S.P.). Students who complete the school psychology option of the MSAP but who do not continue to completion of the SSP degree are not eligible for state or national certification as a school psychologist. The school psychology option of the MSAP is not a terminal degree, but is preparatory for further specialist level training in school psychology. Graduate degree students are accepted into either the Clinical Counseling Psychology Option or the School Psychology Option. The Winthrop School Psychology Program is a three-year, full-time graduate training sequence leading to the Specialist in School Psychology (SSP) degree. The Winthrop School Psychology Program is primarily designed to prepare practitioners who are competent to provide a full range of school psychological services including consultation, behavioral intervention, psychoeducational assessment, research, program planning evaluation and counseling.

We look for answers to Appalachian State University application questionnaire that are well written and concise and reflect good understanding of the field of School Psychology and of the applicant match with the field, as well as awareness of why Appalachian program would be a good fit. We also require that students take the Praxis School Psychologist exam, which contains considerable basic psychology content. For students with master degrees in psychology, the program requires a minimum of 42 hours to attain the Specialist in School Psychology degree (SSP).

Although an interim Master of Science (MS) degree is awarded at the end of the second year, students admitted to the program are expected to complete the full three-year training program. Students are prepared to work with diverse clients from infancy to young adulthood, including those with low-incidence disabilities, and with families, teachers and others in the schools and community.
