The field of Humanities, Health, and Medicine, which can also be referred to as the Medical and Health Humanities, explores and advances relationships between the humanities, arts, and social sciences on the one hand and health and health care on the other. The content and methods of humanistic disciplines have the power to transform health care for all by enhancing human connections, deepening the capacity for empathy, and improving our understanding of the cultural and social contexts in which health, illness, and care occur. At the same time, focusing on health and health care reveals new relevance for humanistic scholarship and teaching in a society increasingly dominated by STEM fields. Several books offer excellent s of the field, including Health Humanities Reader, Medical Humanities: An Introduction, and Research Methods in Health Humanities.

The MA-HHM program is a good fit for anyone excited intersections of humanities, health, and medicine who also wishes to hone their skills as writers, researchers, and critical thinkers while gaining a Master of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

The program is designed in particular, however, for three specific audiences:.

Students considering applications to health professional school but who also have interests in the humanities, arts, or humanistic social sciences. capacity to offer empathic and context-sensitive patient care, as well as to enhance their own self-care, self-reflection, and resilience. in admissions.

Students who wish to explore the special forms of significance that humanistic disciplines gain when pursued in the contexts of health, healing, and health care. Such students may ultimately choose to use their MA in Humanities, Health, and Medicine as a bridge to PhD programs in any number of humanities disciplines, including the medical humanities themselves.

Students, including those who may already have substantial professional experience, who wish to bring humanistic knowledge, skills, and frameworks to the health care sector, whether as care providers, researchers, policy advocates, consultants, or administrators.

Admissions for Fall 2025 entry will open in August 2024. The priority admissions deadline is December 15, 2024. All applications must be received by March 1, 2024.

Writing Sample: You will be asked to provide a 10-20 page writing sample. Your writing sample will be used to help assess your readiness for graduate-level work in humanities disciplines. The sample does not need to relate to health or medicine.

The MS in Medical Science curriculum is flexible and designed to provide a strong foundation in biological sciences along with scholarly activities that will encourage team-oriented projects, enhance interdisciplinary communication, develop leadership skills, and provide the foundation for a broad understanding of scientific, medical and regulatory issues.

The MS in Medical Science degree is available through the Clinical Translational Science (CTS) track of the School of Medicine graduate program. The overall educational goal of this track is to prepare future physician-scientists to bridge the interface between patient care and bench research, interact effectively with the spectrum of healthcare providers and community members, and function efficiently within large research teams.

The new Engineering Medicine (EnMed) program allows students to obtain an engineering degree along with their medical degree in an integrated four-year course of study. Graduates will be well poised to develop new therapy paradigms and pharmaceuticals and solve a variety of health care problems.

The Master of Science in Education for Healthcare Professionals (EDHP) will provide the opportunity for individuals to develop the background and skills necessary to be excellent teachers in their areas of specialty and conduct research to improve and develop innovative educational programs in health professions education. Students who have an interest in academia are encouraged toward this program.

The MS in Science and Technology Journalism (STJR) provides students with skills to communicate with various audiences medicine, science, and technology, both through the mass media and by other means. Students also explore the broader contexts of such communication in order to best serve society. Much of the learning can aid in communicating in clinical settings.

He is responsible for all planning, policy, operations and oversight of the clinical sciences department, instrumental for instructing students in the science of patient care. In line with a field of science that emphasizes multi-disciplinary, collaborative research, the proposed doctoral degree program in Translational Science is offered as a multi-institutional joint degree program. The four UT System universities partnering in this effort are:.

This collaboration of four universities to offer a single joint doctoral degree is unique in the UT System. The program is designed to use the existing resources and expertise in specific key areas of each university to offer a strong, diverse, and competitive Translational Science PhD. The TS PhD will prepare the next generation of scientists to lead the multi-disciplinary biomedical research teams of the future in increasingly complex research environments. These scientists will advance knowledge in areas across the translational research spectrum ranging from basic discovery, through human investigation, to population-based and policy research, toward the goal of translating scientific discoveries into strategies that will improve healthcare delivery, patient outcomes, and community health.

For many years, extensive national resources have been devoted to basic biomedical (bench) and clinical (human subject) research however, significant barriers continue to exist in moving knowledge bi-directionally between basic research, clinical research, and applications to improve health outcomes in individuals and the community. These barriers make it difficult to efficiently and effectively translate new knowledge into improved patient care.

To remedy these problems, Translational Science has emerged as an academic and scientific discipline. Translational Science (TS) is a scientific discipline that investigates methods to move discovery efficiently and effectively into application. TS investigators must respond, interact, facilitate change, and conduct research within and among varied organizational behaviors, structures, and cultures. the basic science laboratory, clinical research discoveries, and application of these research findings toward disease prevention and management, and strategies to improve human, community, and global health.

The School of Law, in association with the School of Medicine in the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, offers a program that enables a student to earn both the Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) and Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees in six years. The program is designed for individuals interested in the areas of health care, health care policy, bioterrorism, forensics, or biomedical compliance.

Interested students are required to submit an admission application and supporting documents to both the School of Law and the School of Medicine in the same annual admissions cycle. It is important to note that entrance into both programs of study require significant advanced preparation and adherence to strict deadlines. It is imperative that interested applicants familiarize themselves with the processes of both programs of study.

Applicants are encouraged to take the February or June LSAT in the year before they intend to begin the program. (E.g. Feb June 2016 for students starting Fall 2017) This will allow applicants to submit their JD application in early September and receive their decision before medical school commitments are due.
