The physician assistant is prepared, both academically and clinically, to provide health care services under the direction and supervision of a doctor of medicine (MD) or a doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO). PA functions include performing diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, and health maintenance services. PAs practice in a variety of settings in nearly every medical and surgical specialty area. Many practice within primary care areas, including family practice. Other common practice areas are general surgery, surgery specialties, and emergency medicine. The rest are involved in teaching, research, administration, or other nonclinical roles.

At its June 2019 meeting, the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) extended Accreditation-Probation status for the AdventHealth University Physician Assistant Program sponsored by AdventHealth University, until its next review in June 2021. Accreditation Probation Accreditation Probation accreditation is a temporary status of accreditation, up to two years, granted when a program holding an accreditation status of Accreditation Provisional or Accreditation Continued does not meet the Standards or when the capability of the program to provide an acceptable educational experience for its students is threatened. Once placed on probation, a program that fails to comply with accreditation requirements in a timely manner, as specified by the ARC-PA, may be scheduled for a focused site visit and or risk having its accreditation withdrawn. The AdventHealth University (AHU) Physician Assistant program has been, and remains, accredited.
