As an MPH student at UMD, you will be part of a cohort that will take a set of core courses of 14 credits over three semesters together. These courses provide innovative instruction in a number of areas of public health, including data collection and analysis, policy, health care systems, communication, ethics and leadership. While completing the integrated core, you will take courses in your chosen concentration area and have the opportunity to complete internships unique to the Maryland DC national capital region and relevant capstone projects. The 45-credit program can be completed within two years for full-time students.

The PharmD MPH dual degree program is a partnership between the University of Maryland Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine.

The mission of the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is to promote and protect the health and well-being of the diverse communities throughout Maryland, the nation and the world through interdisciplinary education, research, practice, leadership and public policy. The MPH program is based in the Epidemiology and Public Health at the School of Medicine.

It may be possible to combine the MPH capstone experience with an elective advanced pharmacy practice rotation, provided that the student has finished all required core and concentration courses in the MPH.

PharmD students interested in participating in the PharmD MPH dual degree program may apply for entrance to the MPH program during their second year in the PharmD program. Accepted students will step out of pharmacy in the following year to complete 36 credits as a full time MPH student in Balti . The student will then returns to pharmacy as a full-time, third-year student to finish all requirements for both degrees.

The Public Health Program offers The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) generalist specialization which provides its students with research, policymaking, program planning, and cultural skills. Graduates are competent in the development and implementation of health promotion and disease prevention programs that support behavior change at the community, family, and individual levels.

If the earned master degree is not the MPH degree. Transcripts will be evaluated to determine if the core MPH level courses, or equivalent content, were taken in achieving the required Master degree. Students admitted with a degree other than the MPH may be required to fulfill additional course requirements. Successful applicants are admitted to the DrPH program only in the fall semester.

DrPH Program of StudyMatriculating DrPH students must complete a doctoral curriculum designed to provide advanced-level knowledge of the five domains of public health plus other foundational courses. Combined these courses cover advanced areas of epidemiology, environmental health, biostatistics, research methods, health planning, and policy administration as well as social and behavioral factors in public health. In addition to satisfactorily completing the core courses in each of the five domains of public health, doctoral students must pass a core competency exam, satisfy 12 credits in electives, complete a practicum and satisfy all dissertation requirements for the degree.
