SLU's M.S.W. program offers multiple course delivery formats to assist students who are working full- or part-time and for students who want to progress faster by taking additional credits per semester.

Aquinas Institute of Theology and the School of Social Work at Saint Louis University offer a dual degree program comprised of a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies and a Master of Social Work, which allows students to complete both degrees in 80 credits instead of the 105 credits required to complete both degrees independently.

Through a dual track of coursework and fieldwork, the program is designed to prepare students for professional pastoral ministry and social work. The program provides the framework, skills, and resources necessary for spiritually oriented social work practice and deepens a professional commitment to social justice.

Applicants must fulfill all admission requirements for both schools, and acceptance into both programs is required for admission into the dual degree program.

The Dual Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies and Master of Social Work is a residential program that requires students to be present in person for classes at Aquinas Institute and Saint Louis University.

Full-time students (15 credits semester) can complete the dual degree program in five semesters. Part-time students must complete the program within six years.

In place of 13 credits of MAPS electives, dual degree MAPS MSW students take 13 credits of MSW courses.

These degrees offer multiple opportunities to engage in field education. Students complete Supervised Practice of Ministry (SPM) I in a pastoral placement, as well as a Foundation Practicum and a Concentration Practicum within a social work placement. The field education curriculum in both programs helps the student develop a pastoral leadership style that is marked by effectiveness, service, integration, and a special commitment to the ministry of the Word.

Students who hold the dual MAPS MSW degree are well-prepared for ministries available to non-social work students, as well as for clinical or community social work. Graduates of this program have successfully drawn upon their study of theology, ministry, and social work in such fields as health care, non-profit ministries, and education. After graduation, students are able to seek professional licensing as social workers.

The MSW curriculum consists of 45 credit hours.
