The certificate in African and African American Studies is a graduate certificate. Students pursuing the certificate in African and African American Studies must complete:.

A thesis (for the PhD program in which they have been admitted) that in some way features African and African American Studies.2.

All course requirements met with Rice University coursework (transfer credit not permitted). For additional program guidelines regarding transfer credit, see the Policies tab.

A minimum program GPA of 3. or higher in all Rice coursework that satisfies requirements for the graduate certificate with a minimum grade of B+ (3. grade points) in each course.

Course substitutions must be formally applied and entered into Degree Works by the certificate Official Certifier.

CAAAS must verify that a student thesis (for the PhD program in which they have been admitted) in some way features African and African American Studies.

Of the 3 courses (9-10 credit hours, depending on course selection) of Elective Requirements, no than 2 courses (6 credit hours) may be taken from the same subject code (i.e., ANTH, ENGL, HIST, POLI, RELI, SOCI).

ANTH 564 is a variable credit hour course (1-6 credit hours). To be eligible to fulfill Elective Requirements, it must be taken for at least 3 credit hours.

Students must complete 2 consecutive fall and spring semesters of AAAS 600. As a certificate colloquium requirement, students must attend and participate in six colloquium gatherings sponsored by CAAAS. In addition, all participating students are required to present their research in one of the sponsored colloquium gatherings. AAAS 600 is taken for a Satisfactory Unsatisfactory grade and must be completed with a Satisfactory grade. As a S U course it does not requirement of a minimum grade of B+ (3. grade points) in each required course.

DAAS accepts rolling admissions to the certificate program. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible in their graduate program, but Rackham requires that students wait to enroll until they have completed one full term of graduate study at U of M.

AAS 601: Pro-seminar on Interdisciplinary Approaches to African American Diasporan Studies (3 Credits).

All GCP students intending to obtain a graduate certificate in African American and Diasporic Studies must enroll in the pro-seminar AAS 601. Designed to provide a strong interdisciplinary foundation and familiarize students with a wide range of methodological approaches, the course introduces students to questions and themes that have shaped and continue to shape the fields of African American and Diasporic Studies. This course is typically offered during the Fall term.

Capstone Research Course: AAS 891 Seminar or AAS 890 Independent Study (3 Credits).

GCP students must also enroll in AAS 891 (Capstone Seminar) or AAS 890 (Independent Study). series that will facilitate this requirement. Students may also fulfill the requirement by giving a presentation in their primary department or at a conference or symposium hosted by U-M, by another university, or by a recognized academic professional organization.

Breadth Requirement (9 credits total)In addition to the pro-seminar and AAS 891, all GCP students must complete three graduate-level courses in African American, Caribbean, or Diasporic Studies. All credit hours beyond the pro-seminars and the Capstone requirements must include approved graduate-level courses.
