In order to be accepted, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree. No specific discipline for this bachelor’s degree is required.
In order to obtain the certificate, students will need to successfully complete ANSC 422, Companion Animal Nutrition, and two additional courses of their choosing from the list below.
The certificate program is currently a three semester program with all courses offered entirely . For those who need them, continuing education (CE) credits will be provided after the successful completion of each course.
All courses are priced at the same rate. For those who begin in the fall of 2019, the cost will be $700 credit ($2,100 for each 3-credit course). The certificate, which requires three courses of three credits each, would cost a total of $6,300.

Required for certificate and pre-requisite for ANSC 526, first offered fall 2019 -This course will cover the digestive physiology and basic nutritional considerations of companion animals, with primary focus on dogs and cats. Topics will include macronutrient and micronutrient digestion, metabolism, and function, nutritional idiosyncrasies of dogs and cats, unique nutritional needs throughout the life cycle, nutrient needs during exercise, common pet food ingredients, and nutritional sustainability. Deadline for registration is August 19, 2019.
First offered spring 2020 Integrates principles of animal nutrition with various aspects pertaining to pet food and animal feed manufacturing. Topics discussed in this course include processing technologies (e.g., extrusion, retorting, baking) involved in the manufacturing of pet foods and animal feeds, principles of diet formulation and nutritional guidelines, and an of regulatory affairs, quality control, and good manufacturing practices.
Advanced Companion Animal Nutrition (ANSC 526 3 credits).
First offered fall 2020 Students will learn effectively advanced concepts related to pet nutrition and disease, including the metabolism within healthy and diseased dogs and cats, how nutrition may aid in preventing and treating disease, and the science behind pet food formulation and production.

Many students across the US and beyond require an Animal Nutrition course as a pre-requisite for Veterinary School. We offer ANS 225 (summer) and ANS 230 (fall and or spring) by Distance Education to fulfill that requirement.Students can sign up as a NON DEGREE STUDENT and register to take one of these classes.
A person may be admitted to the certificate program after completing the first course that will be used to fulfill the certificate requirements with a C or higher grade.
Students pursuing university certificate programs are considered non-degree studies (NDS) students for the purpose of university registration. NDS students may register for a maximum of six credit hours per semester. Thus, the certificate may take from two to four semesters to complete. (2.0) is required for each course a C-minus will not be accepted.
This certificate provides foundational knowledge necessary to work in animal feed research facilities, feed production facilities, agricultural advising consultancies, and feed mills.
