In addition, students have the opportunity of studying in two degree programs simultaneously, plus a joint program with the Urban Planning by awarding two degrees or a Certificate in Urban Design. The Architecture and the Urban Studies and Planning offer a joint graduate program in urban design, and recognize the completion of Architecture program by awarding a Certificate in Urban Design. Students in the Master of Architecture (MArch), Master of Science in Architectural Studies (SMArchS), Master in City Planning (MCP), or Master of Science in Urban Studies and Planning (MS) degree programs are eligible for a Certificate in Urban Design if they complete curriculum subjects drawn from the two departments. To earn the Certificate in Urban Design students must first be admitted and enrolled in the MArch, SMArchS, MCP, or MS degree programs and complete at least one subject in each of six curriculum areas. The Urban Design Seminar, covering key issues and trends in city design, is a required subject for all certificate students, providing a common experience and base of knowledge. Students’ theses proposals must also be approved by the Certificate committee. Students wishing to pursue a Certificate in Urban Design need to declare this at least two semesters before graduation, and must complete a program form that indicates which of the Certificate subjects they intend to take.

The Architecture offers a certificate program in Ecological Architecture that provides an opportunity for students enrolled in the Masters of Architecture or other degree programs to gain expertise in ecological design. The Certificate program also offers practicing professionals the opportunity to pursue specialized training. The basic goal of the certificate in ecological architecture is to help students develop an understanding of the dynamic interaction between the natural and built environments, and to introduce performance based techniques for operating in that interaction. The certificate in ecological architecture introduces students to the range of approaches in two required courses, and then allows them to pursue different emphases through a selection of elective courses. The certificate in Ecological Architecture requires the completion of 2.0 course units of required courses and 3.0 course units of elective courses. Application to the certificate is made through the Weitzman Office of Admissions. Students who are already enrolled in the Weitzman School should submit a one-page essay explaining their interest in ecological architecture as well as a work plan showing their proposed schedule of study for completion of the certificate. Courses required for a student’s main degree may not be counted toward the certificate.

The certificate is also an ideal complement to a graduate studies in architecture, landscape architecture, building science, planning, public art administration, geography, anthropology, or other related disciplines. This certificate provides students with the tools necessary to understand and quantify sources of energy use in buildings and landscapes and to use design of natural and man-made systems to reduce their energy use. The Graduate Certificate in Urban Informatics introduces students to this field, and includes not only technical skills for technology development and data analysis, but also opportunities to explore the ethical, legal, and policy questions created by new urban technologies. The certificate program is centered on several interrelated areas of professional innovation:. The Certificate program involves UM researchers are pursuing related projects such as the real-time monitoring and management of various infrastructure systems including stormwater and transportation networks. A key function of the Center is to support graduate student education and research opportunities that lead to the Certificate in Health Systems Design. The Certificate emphasizes a cross-disciplinary perspective yet also ensures that students develop an in-depth understanding and ability within a specific body of knowledge. In 1999, seven students were awarded the Certificate in Health Systems Design upon completion of their degree programs. Since that time, over 300 students have received this certificate. The Certificate program appears to be successful in helping advance the career goals of these students. Other certificate recipients have gone on to prominent positions in both practice and academia. PurposeThe Certificate in Health Systems Design (HSD) provides students in any graduate degree program at Texas A M University an opportunity to develop a body of knowledge in health design that will further their career goals. The certificate assumes health systems and design is a cross-disciplinary field, and the program is designed to ensure that students gain a sense of mutual respect for others in the field, and appropriate awareness, understanding, and ability within a specific body of knowledge. However, the Certificate Council is charged with ensuring that students who have applied for the health certificate have met content standards. The program can usually be accomplished with the minimum number of hours required for the degree however, additional hours may be required by the student Graduate Advisory Committee, and students may choose to take additional hours not on the degree plan in order to meet the requirements for the Certificate. The CertificateThe certificate is awarded after completion of the program, and must be approved and signed by the Director of the Center for Health Systems Design.
