The Departments of Earth and Environmental Science, Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics, Earth and Environmental Engineering, and Chemical Engineering cooperate with each other and with the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and International Research Institute for Climate and Society in offering a graduate program in atmospheric science. The program supports research on atmospheres and climates in all their aspects. Each graduate student is enrolled in an academic department and follows the normal procedures of that department regarding admission and progression towards the PhD degree. Relevant seminars and other activities occur in all participating departments and institutes, providing a uniquely broad and stimulating intellectual environment for graduate study.

Students interested in the Atmospheric Science program must apply to and be admitted by one of the following participating departments and must satisfy the requirements of that department: Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics, Earth and Environmental Engineering, or Chemical Engineering (all in the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science) Earth and Environmental Sciences (in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences). Applicants need a strong background in basic physical sciences and mathematics, including advanced calculus and differential equations, and should be aware that, if they are admitted, any deficiencies should be remedied during the first year.

The Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES) has research programs in many aspects of modern climate, atmospheric science, and physical oceanography. It also has major programs in paleoclimate and geochemistry, which complement the study of the modern climate.

The Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics (APAM) has research programs in atmospheric and climate dynamics, focusing on numerical modeling, theory, and diagnostics.

The Earth and Environmental Engineering (DEEE) has research programs in climate particularly through connections to water resources and geochemistry, as well as on engineering responses to the climate change problem.

The Chemical Engineering (CHEN) has research programs in atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric aerosols.

The NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) has research programs in climate modeling, climate change, remote sensing, and atmospheric physics and chemistry. Graduate students in both DEES and APAM may work with GISS scientists.

The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) has research programs in climate prediction and predictability on all time scales, as well as modeling and regional dynamics studies, societal impacts of climate, and the application of climate science to achieve societal benefit. Graduate students may work with IRI scientists.

As such, most students can add EAP onto a degree without any additional time or cost. PhD students may use the EAP certificate to fulfill their doctoral breadth requirement, though in this case courses may not be double-counted for major requirements.

Since its formation in 1980, EAP has provided students with the skills and knowledge needed by professionals in government, energy companies, consulting firms, and other organizations. EAP draws students from across campus. Particularly large student groups from public policy, environmental studies, engineering, and urban planning pursue the certificate because of the program interdisciplinary curriculum which considers a wide range of technical, economic, political, and social factors that shape energy policy formulation and decision-making.

Students may EAP program concurrently with their graduate school application or once they have matriculated at UW-Madison. Acceptance into EAP is contingent on enrollment in a graduate degree program.

While there are no prerequisites to the program, it is recommended that EAP applicants have completed at least one college-level course in each of the following five subject areas: physical science (physics or chemistry) natural science (biology, environmental, geology or atmospheric and oceanic) economics social sciences or humanities (besides economics) and calculus or statistics.

To declare the certificate, students must complete the online Energy Analysis and Policy (EAP) application form, which includes the following elements:.

A brief statement of interest in the EAP program.

Applications to EAP may be submitted at any time, but applicants are encouraged to apply before the end of their first year in graduate school to ensure timely completion of certificate requirements.

Each EAP student must complete five courses (13 credits), including an introductory course, a capstone course, a professional skills seminar, and one course from each of two categories: Energy Analysis and Energy Policy. Courses in the Energy Policy category involve the social, political, and environmental factors that underly decision-making around energy choices.

Some courses listed in the Energy Analysis category may have some overlap with the Energy Policy category, and vice versa.

Seminar (Topic: Prof Skills in Energy Analysis and Policy).

Because this is a 2-credit course, students selecting this course option are required to take an additional 1-credit course in consultation with the certificate coordinator.

Once approved, the EAP Academic Coordinator will distribute a list of course offerings for the upcoming semester to students in the EAP program.

The extent to which the course content is devoted to energy.

The rigor of methodology applied to the course material.

Demonstrate an awareness of the variety of energy sources and energy conversion technologies and master the language and scientific basis required to engage in the analysis of energy topics.

Analyze and compare the sustainability of different energy sources technologies from the perspective of engineering, economics, environmental impacts, and security of .

Demonstrate an awareness of the socio-political institutions that govern the energy industry and the societal and social justice impacts of energy policies.

Prepare for energy-related career pathways in industry, government, academia, NGOs, regulatory agencies and energy consulting. projects for actual clients in multidisciplinary student groups.
