Global climate change is increasing extreme weather events, influencing air and water quality, and shifting vector habitats. Following an introduction to climate science, this course explores the associated health risks, including respiratory disease, vector-borne disease, food-borne disease, malnutrition, mental health, and disaster-related illness. Students explore how these changing health risks vary by geography and socio-demographics resulting in differences in population vulnerabilities. Methods used to assess climate-associated health risks and anticipate current and future health needs include monitoring for environmental conditions and disease surveillance.

LAWRENCE — As climate change threatens the world, governments and organizations from around the globe have banded together to fight its effects. Research from the University of Kansas has found that nongovernment organizations, or NGOs, dedicated to fighting climate change from rich countries and certain parts of the globe are dominating the online conversation, leaving others at risk of being left out. Despite their stated goal of collaboration for global good, a big-data analysis of their social media use found NGOs in the global north and Oceania are the most engaged, most connected and have the largest audience for their message combating climate change.

Scientists have been studying the Earth’s powerful greenhouse effect for than two centuries. As world-wide economic development caused large emissions of greenhouse gasses by the mid 20th century, scientists around 1970 began to study how these emissions would affect our climate. At the turn of the 21st century, a pronounced planetary warming trend was obvious. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia.
