Biochemistry is a department within the School of Medicine, with offices and labs located in the Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine at the Stanford Medical Center. Courses offered by the department may be taken by as well as graduate and medical school students.
Advanced courses offered in specialized areas emphasize recent developments in biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology. These courses include the physical and chemical principles of biochemistry, enzyme reaction mechanisms, membrane trafficking and biochemistry, molecular motors and the cytoskeleton, mechanisms and regulation of nucleic acid replication and recombination, the biochemistry of bacterial and animal viruses, the molecular basis of morphogenesis, the molecular and cell biology of yeast, and the structure and function of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic chromosomes.
Opportunities exist for directed reading and research in biochemistry and molecular biology, using the most advanced research facilities, including those for light and electron microscopy, chromatography and electrophoresis, protein and nucleic acid purification, rapid kinetic analysis, synthesis and analysis, single molecule analyses using laser light traps, microarray generation and analysis, and computer graphic workstation facilities for protein and nucleic acid structural analysis. Ongoing research uses a variety of organisms from bacteria to animal cells.

The Biochemistry offers a Ph.D. program which begins in the Autumn Quarter of each year. In addition to the requirement for a Ph.D. dissertation based on original research, students are required to complete six advanced courses in biochemistry and related areas among the 135 total units required for the Ph.D. Selection of these courses is tailored to fit the background and interests of each student. All Ph.D. students are expected to participate actively in the department seminar program, and students are encouraged to attend and to present papers at regional and national meetings in cellular biochemistry and molecular biology. Teaching experience is an integral part of the Ph.D. curriculum and is required for the degree.
The Biochemistry offers an M.S. degree only to students already enrolled in the Ph.D. program. Students should contact the Graduate Studies adviser for details.
Those applying for graduate study should have at least a baccalaureate degree and should have completed work in cell and developmental biology, basic biochemistry and molecular biology, and genetics. Also required are: at least one year of university physics differential and integral calculus and organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. The department is especially interested in those applicants who have research experience in biology or chemistry. Students must submit an application, including transcripts and letters of recommendation, by December for admission in the following Autumn Quarter.
Applications should be submitted at the Office of Graduate Admissions web site. Applicants are notified by March 31 of decisions on their applications. Stanford University requires scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (verbal, quantitative, and analytical), and applicants are encouraged to submit scores from the GRE Subject Test in biochemistry, biology, or chemistry. Applicants should take the October GRE exam.
Postdoctoral research training is available to graduates who hold a Ph.D. or an M.D. degree.
At present, the primary research interests of the department are the structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids, the biochemistry and control of development processes, molecular motors and the cytoskeleton, the trafficking of proteins between membrane-bound organelles, the control and regulation of gene expression, bioinformatics protein structure design, and the application of microarrays to problems in human health and disease.
The Biochemistry is committed to providing academic advising in support of graduate student scholarly and professional development. When most effective, this advising relationship entails collaborative and sustained engagement by both the adviser and the advisee. As a best practice, advising expectations should be periodically discussed and reviewed to ensure mutual understanding. Both the adviser and the advisee are expected to maintain professionalism and integrity.

Continuation of 109A 209A. Genetic drift: the path of human predecessors out of Africa to Europe and then either through Asia to Australia or through northern Russia to Alaska down to the W. Coast of the Americas. Support for this idea through the histocompatibility genes and genetic sequences that predispose people to diseases. Guest lectures from academia and pharmaceutical companies. Prerequisite: Biology or Human Biology core. Same as: BIO 109B.
Enrollment limited to MD candidates. Fundamental concepts of biochemistry as applied to clinical medicine. Topics include vitamins and cofactors, metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and nucleotides, and the integration of metabolic pathways. Clinical case studies discussed in small-group, problem-based learning sessions.

The physical and chemical basis of macromolecular function. Topics include: forces that stabilize macromolecular structure and their complexes thermodynamics and statistical mechanics of macromolecular folding, binding, and allostery diffusional processes kinetics of enzymatic processes the relationship of these principles to practical application in experimental design and interpretation. The class emphasizes interactive learning, and is divided equally among lectures, in-class group problem solving, and discussion of current and classical literature. Enrollment limited to 40. Prerequisites: Background in biochemistry and physical chemistry recommended but material available for those with deficiency in these areas with consent of instructor only. Directed Reading in Biochemistry.
Biochemistry 2nd year PhD students with permission of instructor only. Students place their thesis research into a broader scientific perspective, identify important questions to ask, and learn to communicate these clearly. The initial focus is on developing the equivalent of a specific aims page for a research grant.
Biochemistry 3rd and 4th year PhD students with permission of instructor only. Students foster broad familiarity with the biomedical literature and learn to develop new research directions. Topics well outside of each student research topic are chosen for regular informal journal club presentations. Students work collectively to create a model research proposal on a topic of general interest to the group, and then individually to develop an original proposal on a topic of each student choice.

The interdisciplinary Graduate Group in Comparative Biochemistry administers the PhD degree for students interested in a biochemical and molecular approach to problems in the biological sciences.
The following minimum requirements apply to all graduate programs and will be verified by the Graduate Division:.
If the applicant has completed a basic degree from a country or political entity (e.g., Quebec) where English is not the official language, adequate proficiency in English to do graduate work, as evidenced by a TOEFL score of at least 90 on the iBT test, 570 on the paper-and-pencil test, or an IELTS Band score of at least 7 on a 9-point scale (note that individual programs may set higher levels for any of these) and.
The Graduate Council views academic degrees not as vocational training certificates, but as evidence of broad training in research methods, independent study, and articulation of learning. Therefore, applicants who already have academic graduate degrees should be able to pursue new subject matter at an advanced level without the need to enroll in a related or similar graduate program.
Applicants with doctoral degrees may be admitted for an additional doctoral degree only if that degree program is in a general area of knowledge distinctly different from the field in which they earned their original degree.
Applicants may apply only to one single degree program or one concurrent degree program per admission cycle.
Unofficial transcripts must contain specific information including the name of the applicant, name of the school, all courses, grades, units, degree conferral (if applicable).
Letters of recommendation: Applicants may request online letters of recommendation through the online application system. Hard copies of recommendation letters must be sent directly to the program, by the recommender, not the Graduate Admissions.
Evidence of English language proficiency:All applicants who have completed a basic degree from a country or political entity in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency. However, applicants who, at the time of application, have already completed at least one year of full-time academic course work with grades of B or better at a US university may submit an official transcript from the US university to fulfill this requirement. The Chemistry and Biochemistry offers the Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Chemistry, and the Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Biochemistry, Molecular and Structural Biology.
Thirty-eight units of coursework are required. After completion of Chemistry and Biochemistry 269A-269B-269C-269D-269E, at least four additional units of graduate level courses are required. Additional lecture courses are chosen from a list of approved graduate courses available from the schedule of classes. Up to 24 units of Chemistry and Biochemistry 596 or 598 may be applied toward the total course requirement up to eight units may be applied toward the graduate course requirement. Up to four units of graduate-level seminar courses may be applied to the graduate course requirement.
Not Required. Students who serve as teaching assistants must enroll in and receive a grade of S for Chemistry and Biochemistry 375 for each quarter they teach in order to continue teaching.
The thesis plan is the preferred method of attaining the M.S. degree in Biochemistry, Molecular and Structural Biology. Preference in admissions is given to students who have already identified a research adviser under whose direction the thesis research is conducted. Students have five academic quarters after the submission of proposal to complete the degree.
From admission to completion of courses: Three academic quarters (one calendar year).
From admission to award of degree: Three to six academic quarters (one to two calendar years).
Students continue to consult with this adviser each quarter until completion of their course requirements. Notification in writing is given to students who are performing at a very high level and to those who are not making adequate progress.
Minimum Progress. The committee may recommend that students (1) proceed to the oral examination, (2) be redirected to the M.S. program, or (3) be recommended for termination.
(1) Required background material: one year organic chemistry, one course in physical chemistry or biophysical chemistry, one year of biochemistry, some coursework in the life sciences, and some biochemistry laboratory experience.
(2) Chemistry and Biochemistry 269A-269B-269C-269D-269E (10 units) should be taken in the first year.
(3) Sixteen units of additional upper division or graduate-level courses, including four to six units of seminar courses or the equivalent. Courses are chosen in consultation with the graduate adviser. Two seminar courses should be included in the selected courses to ensure that the student gains training in the critical evaluation of scientific literature.
(4) Chemistry and Biochemistry 258 during the first quarter of the second year.
(5) Chemistry and Biochemistry 268 during the first three quarters of the first year.
(6) Three laboratory rotations (Chemistry and Biochemistry 596) during the first year.
One year of teaching experience (three quarters) is generally required. Students who serve as teaching assistants must enroll in Chemistry and Biochemistry 375 for each quarter that they teach.
Academic Senate regulations require all doctoral students to complete and pass University written and oral qualifying examinations prior to doctoral advancement to candidacy. Also, under Senate regulations the University oral qualifying examination is open only to the student and appointed members of the doctoral committee. In addition to University requirements, some graduate programs have other pre-candidacy examination requirements. What follows in this section is how students are required to fulfill all of these requirements for this doctoral program.
The written examination requirement is coupled to the graduate student seminar (Chemistry and Biochemistry 258). After completing this oral presentation, the student prepares a written dissertation research proposal. The proposal includes information the background and significance of the area of research, the specific aims to be addressed and experiments proposed. The written qualifying component of the Ph.D. program is fulfilled after the student satisfactorily completes this proposal. A written proposal that is deemed unsatisfactory may be revised once.
Students are advanced to candidacy upon successful completion of the written and oral qualifying examinations. The Candidate in Philosophy (C.Phil.) degree is awarded for the quarter in which students are advanced to candidacy.
The following are normal times to complete the requirements of the program:.
From admission to advancement to candidacy: six academic quarters (two calendar years).
From admission to award of degree: 12 to 18 academic quarters (four to six calendar years).
Termination of Graduate Study and Appeal of Termination.
A graduate student may be disqualified from continuing in the graduate program for a variety of reasons. The most common is failure to maintain the minimum cumulative grade point average (3.00) required by the Academic Senate to remain in good standing (some programs require a higher grade point average). Other examples include failure of examinations, lack of timely progress toward the degree and poor performance in core courses. University guidelines governing termination of graduate students, including the appeal procedure, are outlined in Standards and Procedures for Graduate Study at UCLA.

The Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School has played a prominent role in the development of the subject of biochemistry. Dr. Vaughan was an early member of the National Academy of Sciences and a founder of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
This includes two members of the National Academy of Sciences, three Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators, MacArthur Foundation Awardees, and Pew Scholars.
Investigators in the department bring to bear a range of technologies to address important biomedical questions from a biochemical perspective. This emphasis on the molecular mechanisms of life is further strengthened by our close ties and cross-appointments with the Life Sciences Institute, the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute, the Chemistry Department and the Biophysics Program on the main campus, making the Biological Chemistry the centerpiece of a large and diverse biochemical community at the University of Michigan.
The graduate program leading to the Ph.D. degree in Biological Chemistry is designed to provide outstanding training toward careers in research and scholarship in the broad area of biochemistry and molecular biology. This program exposes students to a spectrum of current research through innovative course structures that allow students the opportunity to design their own optimal curriculum. Students also attend seminars presented by prominent national and international scientists and present seminars on their own research.
During the fall of the second year, students in Biological Chemistry write and defend orally an in-depth research proposal in an area of their choosing, which can include the general area of the student dissertation research. Through this mechanism, students gain valuable experience in the preparation of a competitive research proposal and in the development of independence in scientific reasoning.
Ph.D. students in Biological Chemistry gain teaching experience by serving as a teaching assistant for one semester in courses offered by the Biological Chemistry.
Students in the Ph.D. program in Biological Chemistry typically receive their Ph.D. within 5 to 6 years.
Biological Chemistry students successfully compete for NIH training grant positions as well as numerous departmental, institutional, regional, and national awards.
Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Research and Service.
National awards have been received from the American Heart Association, the Ford Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. Our students have also been the recipients of the Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award and the prestigious P.E.O. Scholar Award, which is a one-time competitive, merit-based award for a senior female Ph.D.
Seminar Program. The Biological Chemistry sponsors a weekly seminar program that attracts speakers of international reputation. Students can participate in the selection, invitation and hosting of speakers for this seminar series.
Poster Session for Rotation Students. Students who have rotated in Biological Chemistry labs are invited to present their research at poster sessions held at the end of the fall and winter terms.
Over 513 of our graduates have pursued scientific careers in major academic, government and industrial positions. From 2000-2010, 87 students received their Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry. Additionally, some of our students have pursued careers in scientific public policy, patent law, and clinical or scientific editing. Two graduates of the Department, Stanley Cohen, who discovered epidermal growth factor, and Marshall Nirenberg, who cracked the genetic code, are Nobel Laureates.
