Graduate Certificate Programs in Bioethics and Medical Ethics

The Certificate in Medical Humanities and Bioethics works in concert with our existing Master’s in Medical Humanities and Bioethics program, drawing on that program’s well-established array of interdisciplinary courses. The Certificate program exposes students to the key conceptual approaches and methodological tools that each of the core disciplines in the field of Medical Humanities and Bioethics contributes to addressing problems in medicine. These core disciplines include: Bioethics Philosophy, Law, History, Literature, and the Social Sciences, and our required coursework covers each of these fields in turn in its engagement with medicine.

This interdisciplinary training in Medical Humanities and Bioethics is particularly beneficial to students interested in building upon a primary area of expertise such as medicine, law, genetic counseling, and other related fields. For such students, the Certificate program both provides and marks an additional area of expertise that can enhance and expand their primary professional work. The Certificate offers training relevant to a variety of clinical, academic, and industry career paths, preparing students to take on roles such as serving on hospital ethics committees and institutional review boards, as well as to conduct scholarly and policy work on medicine and ethics.

The Graduate Certificate in Bioethics is designed to meet the needs of current graduate students, as well as individuals working in the areas of health care, health policy, and biomedical research. The certificate will help prepare graduate students and working healthcare professionals for leadership and administrative positions, and membership on ethics committees and IRBs. It will also benefit students who wish to enroll in graduate and professional degree programs, and or compete for prestigious fellowships in bioethics and clinical bioethics.

Students who successfully complete the certificate program will be able to (a) analyze ethical situations, particularly those that arise in medical and scientific contexts, from various theoretical perspectives (b) evaluate the ethical dimensions of policies and practices involved with health care, public health, patient advocacy, medical and scientific research, and related areas and (c) communicate their analyses through written and oral methods to both technical and non-technical audiences.

The Graduate Certificate in Bioethics program is open to currently enrolled Florida State University graduate students who are in good standing. In addition, anyone not currently enrolled in a Florida State University degree program can pursue the certificate by enrolling as a non-degree-seeking student (provided they have a BA or BSc from an accredited institution, which is the only prerequisite for this certificate program). Applicants must be admitted to the certificate program in advance of beginning any coursework.

The Graduate Certificate in Bioethics program comprises 12 hours of graduate coursework, to be completed within 5 years. Students are required to earn a B or better in each class, and must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 in order for the certificate to be granted. Students may transfer up to 3 hours of graduate coursework toward the certificate, subject to course review and approval by the Certificate Director or Associate Director.

Theoretical Foundations of Applied Ethics (3 hours).

This course surveys major ethical theories and their relation to applied ethics, especially biomedical ethics and health policy. The course will include examination and discussion of ethical theories such as consequentialism, duty-based theories, rights-based theories, virtue ethics, and casuistry.

This course serves as a graduate-level introduction to some of the topics, texts, and methods of the field of biomedical ethics.

A) clinical ethics (for those professionals interested in, for example, hospital ethics committees or ethics consultation),.

B) research ethics (for those interested in, for instance, serving on an IRB or IACUC or otherwise consulting research ethics), or.

This course examines philosophical issues that arise in conceptualizing the aims and practices of medicine and medical science within broader cultural contexts.

This is a research seminar on selected problems in biomedical ethics.

The certificate will be designed for students seeking degrees in other disciplines and for healthcare professionals and researchers who are interested in bioethics topics or want to be conversant on these issues, but do not plan to engage in bioethics as their primary focus of research, scholarship, or practice.

Certificate Program in Bioethics and Medical Humanities program trains the graduate students, as well as reflective professionals with backgrounds in health care, law, chaplaincy, social work, basic-science research, and hospital and research administration.

The certificate program enrolls a diverse group of students from the tri-state area each year, providing personal enrichment and the tools needed to better understand the nuances of policy and regulation.

They also actively encourage and admit participants who are not directly involved in health care or scientific research, but whose work is informed by the aspirations and challenges of shaping science and medicine with humane treatment in mind.

Many of our certificate students have complimentary professional degrees or experience in medicine, law, and ministry, and the graduate certificate enhances their work or broadens their professional scope. For others, the graduate certificate offers a glimpse into the field of bioethics that allows them to make educated decisions their next steps: whether it be further graduate study, preparing for clinical or consultative work, or something else.

Requiring a total of 12 credits over 4 courses, the Graduate Certificate in Bioethics can be completed in a single academic year by taking two courses in both Fall and Spring semesters.

The Urban Bioethics graduate certificate program is designed for individuals confronting, or who anticipate confronting, health inequities in their work and are seeking specialized training in understanding and analyzing the ethics, values and value conflicts relevant to the urban setting. Students in the certificate program gain practical skills, theoretical orientations and resources to deliver better care. They are prepared to be innovators in research, care delivery, and policy and advocacy work.

The Urban Bioethics certificate program is a viable option for those who seek additional bioethics training but are unable to fully commit to the master program or who wish to explore the field before applying to the MA program. Students who earn the graduate certificate have one year after being awarded the certificate to apply for the MA program and, if accepted, all certificate credits can be applied to the master degree.

Full-Time Part-Time Status: The graduate certificate can be completed on a part-time basis. NOTE: International students may not be eligible to apply for a student visa based on admission to the certificate program.

Non-Matriculated Student Policy: Non-matriculated students may take up to 9 credits of coursework before applying to the graduate certificate program. Credit toward a subsequent degree program at Temple University is limited to 9 credits. However, if the student completes the Urban Bioethics graduate certificate program, all 14 credits required to earn the certificate are applied to the MA in Urban Bioethics.
