This Certificate can be added to the Master of Bioethics degree, offering students (and alumni) the opportunity to receive additional clinical ethics mediation training right here at Penn. The Certificate in Medical Humanities and Bioethics works in concert with Northwestern University existing Master’s in Medical Humanities and Bioethics program, drawing on that program’s well-established array of interdisciplinary courses. The Certificate program exposes students to the key conceptual approaches and methodological tools that each of the core disciplines in the field of Medical Humanities and Bioethics contributes to addressing problems in medicine. These core disciplines include: Bioethics Philosophy, Law, History, Literature, and the Social Sciences, and Northwestern University required coursework covers each of these fields in turn in its engagement with medicine. This interdisciplinary training in Medical Humanities and Bioethics is particularly beneficial to students interested in building upon a primary area of expertise such as medicine, law, genetic counseling, and other related fields. For such students, the Certificate program both provides and marks an additional area of expertise that can enhance and expand their primary professional work. Students in a variety of areas pursue issues in biomedical ethics, including Behavioral Science and Health Education, Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, Health Services Research and Health Policy, the Graduate Division of Religion, the Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, the Institute of Liberal Arts, Nursing, Philosophy, Sociology, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The Certificate requirements include core courses, a practicum experience, and a teaching experience. The core courses for the Bioethics Certificate are the same as the core of the Master of Arts in Bioethics. The core courses will give PhD students a theoretical foundation for any research project that contributes to the ethics and politics of health, health care, and the biological sciences. Participation in these courses also encourages engagement with the MA students, who contribute a wealth of professional experience in health care.

The Bioethics Graduate Certificate Program provides an educational opportunity at the graduate level for current and future professionals and others throughout the country interested in bioethics, including health care providers, researchers in biomedicine and the life sciences, lawyers, and professionals in religion, health and research administration, and the biotechnology industry. Student IDs: All students will be issued student IDs, which should be worn or accessible at all times, for entry into a number of Einstein, Cardozo and Yeshiva buildings, as well as for the use of library services. MBE students will be issued Einstein student IDs for a period of 2 years. Certificate students will be issued Einstein Student IDs for a period of 1 year. Students should see the Handbook MyYU section below for further instructions. A student adding a course should have already been attending the course, since the masters and certificate programs trict attendance policy will still be in effect. If the initial online registration period has ended, students may use the Course Add Drop form and submit to the Center and Registrar. Financial Considerations:Excepting the initial non-refundable deposit upon acceptance into the Certificate and Masters programs, students can drop a semester-long course without financial penalty within the first week of school. After that, tuition refunds will be pro-rated as follows: after 1st week at 75%after 2nd week at 50%after 3rd week at 25%after 4th week 0% refund. Applying for Graduation: A student applies for a degree by filing either an Application for Graduation-Certificate or an Application for Graduation-MBE prior to anticipated graduation.

In addition to meeting the specifically required coursework for the JD degree and the MA degree, students will select electives from among an array of courses available in the two separate degree programs and in other parts of the University. For an up-to-date list of law school courses considered to be especially appropriate for students in this joint degree program, students should consult the courses listed as electives for the Health Law Certificate Program. Students in the joint law and bioethics program will ordinarily fulfill the requirements of the Health Law Certificate Program in the law school and may obtain this certificate concurrent with the joint degree.

The Philosophy, in conjunction with the History and the Sirridge Office of Medical Humanities and Bioethics, offers an online graduate certificate program in Bioethics. The program provides a foundation in the history and theory of bioethics, a deeper understanding of healthcare law and policy, and the skills necessary to engage in ethics consultation and case review.
