In collaboration with the Chicago Botanic Garden, Northwestern University offers a PhD in Plant Biology and Conservation. The program began in 2009 and aims to foster an academic and research environment that allows students to gain experience, skills, and knowledge to become scholars, leaders, or practitioners in plant biology and conservation. Graduates of the program have strong theoretical and methodological foundations in ecology, conservation, and evolutionary biology, together with the in-depth knowledge required to be able to identify and articulate the frontiers of scholarship and applied science within their area of specialization.

Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology are the study of plant diseases and the biology of plant-microbe interactions at the molecular to ecosystem levels of organization. The Field of Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology at Cornell offers graduate degree programs in plant pathology and the biology, genetics and evolution of fungi and oomycetes.

The Ph.D. program in Plant Biology provides training in basic scientific research in diverse aspects of plant biology, including developmental genetics, molecular regulation of gene expression, cell biology, plant-microbe interactions, ecological genomics, systematics and biogeography, and ecology of plant population and community dynamics. Students in this research-oriented program complete rotations in at least two laboratories before settling in the lab where they complete their dissertation research.

The Crop, Soil and Pest Management graduate program area prepares students for careers in research, teaching, extension, production agriculture and related industries. Current research programs emphasize soil and nutrient management, forage management, cereal and oil seed crop production, alternative crops, cropping systems, weed management, integrated pest management and precision agriculture. Many degree programs are cross-disciplinary to give students a comprehensive view of the field.
