MCO’s unique approach to the biological sciences PhD cultivates versatility as well as depth of expertise by exposing its students to the full spectrum of modern biology. The MCO PhD training program features an unparalleled range of research areas within the biological sciences, including biochemistry, biophysics, cellular biology, chemical and structural biology, computational biology, developmental biology, engineering, evolutionary biology, genetics, genomics, microbiology, molecular biology, neurobiology, physical biology, stem cell biology, and systems biology. The program consists of four tracks: Genetics, Genomics and Evolutionary Biology Cellular, Neuro-, and Developmental Biology Biochemistry, Chemical and Structural Biology and Engineering and Physical Biology.

The program’s mission to advance biological research beyond traditional boundaries is motivated by a passion for discovery and is supported by innovative research centers and state-of-the-art facilities on Harvard’s Cambridge campus. The Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Group (CAMB) is an interdisciplinary graduate program, providing rigorous training in modern cell and molecular biology, preparing students for leadership careers in biomedical research. Within this integrated program are six discipline areas: Cancer Biology Cell Biology, Physiology, and Metabolism Developmental, Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology Gene Therapy and Vaccines Genetics and Epigenetics and Microbiology, Virology and Parasitology. The research efforts of these scientists are diverse in their focus, experimental system, methodology, and represent the leading edge of basic and translational biomedical science.

Students from colleges and universities around the nation and the world are enrolled in the program, selecting one discipline area based on their scientific interests, yet have access to the full breadth of curricular and research opportunities provided by this large and diverse program. Our students participate in core courses in cell and molecular biology, specialized coursework in one or discipline areas, and original hypothesis-driven thesis research. Upon completion of the PhD, they pursue successful research careers at top academic institutions, in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries, and in other biomedicine-related career paths.

The Program in Cancer Biology provides students an opportunity to undertake concentrated study of the basic biological processes that underlie the control of cell growth and metabolism, and how such processes are disrupted during the initiation and progression of cancer. The program stresses the importance of fundamental genetic and molecular pathways regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, movement, and survival. Students present in a research-in-progress seminar series and attend participate in the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute seminar series.

The Master of Science (ScM) is a two-year program that is perfect for students who wish to obtain a blend of coursework with rigorous training in laboratory research. Typically, ScM graduates continue their training in healthcare, or advanced PhD graduate research study, or obtain positions in industry or government.

In the first year, the ScM program includes most courses of the Master of Health Science (MHS) program, which is focused around biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, reproductive biology, and the biology of disease and public health, combined with an additional laboratory component. The first-year laboratory component acquaints ScM students with basic research in the biomedical sciences through work under the guidance of a faculty member and introduces hands-on experience in laboratory research. In the second year, under the guidance of a faculty mentor, ScM students conduct independent, original research, which culminates in an ScM thesis. Students are also required to present their findings at a departmental retreat and/or national meetings. Additionally, ScM students have the opportunity to publish their results in peer-reviewed journals.
