The Interdisciplinary Certificate Program in Early Intervention was developed in response to state and national needs to prepare personnel to serve infants and toddlers with disabilities, or who are at risk for developmental delays, and their families.
The EI specialization may be pursued as an independent certificate program, or integrated into a graduate program in speech-language pathology and audiology, school psychology, counseling psychology, or physical therapy. Personnel who work in the EI field may pursue the certificate program in the context of their employment.
As a result, students experience the team approach that is current practice in the field. Completion of the program leads to the required state certification for early intervention personnel at the advanced provisional level.
Because the program is interdisciplinary, scheduling of courses is done in such a way as to make it available to as many programs as possible.
The practicum requires 300 hours of field experience in a MA DPH certified EI program. Field training usually takes place over two semesters, unless it is embedded into one semester of a discipline-specific degree program.

Within a five-year time period, students seeking the certificate must satisfy 9 credit hours of coursework and 3 credit hours of practicum from the approved list of courses, and complete 45 hours of service learning at an approved practicum sites.

Practicum placement is limited and based on availability of sites within the community each semester. The number of placements will vary. Following completion of all three courses, a transcript must be submitted to the Program Coordinator and verified. To ensure timely completion, verification that coursework is completed must be submitted at least two semesters prior to graduation. Students are placed on the waiting list after verification of coursework. While generally students are placed on the wait list on a first come, first serve basis, graduation dates are factored into the determination of practicum placement. The Program Coordinator assigns placements specific sites may not be requested.

This placement is arranged through the Certificate Program Coordinator and will be determined on the first day of class.

This certificate program is a post-baccalaureate graduate-level clinical training program designed to prepare students for a career in public schools as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA). Students who successfully complete the program will be immediately eligible for SLPA national certification and state licensure. The program is an intensive program offered over the course of 1 semester. A total of 15 credit hours are required, of which 3 are didactic and 12 are clinical experiences.
Online format. This section is geared towards prospective students who are not able to attend the program in person. Specifically, it aims to support applicants from rural areas and who live outside of the Wasatch Front. Externships are NOT offered in counties listed in the Fall Semester Section.
A final grade of no lower than a B in all program coursework is required for successful completion.
A bachelor degree from a Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) program that is part of an accredited institution program (i.e. matriculated students).
A bachelor degree in another field of study other than CSD and have completed all University of Utah CSD and Allied Heath required coursework prior to applying to the SLPA program (i.e. non-matriculated students).
All individuals accepted into the SLPA program will receive an automatic CSD department scholarship in the amount of $2,200.

Prerequisite: CMSD-210, CMSD 310. This course will provide participants with a scientific understanding of the nature of phonological and articulatory disorders. Assessment and treatment of speech sound disorders will be addressed to help participants apply this knowledge to clinical situations. The course will provide participants with the knowledge of the normal aspects of articulatory and phonological development and theories of phonological development. Identification of articulation and phonological disorders, interpret assessment findings, intervention approaches and facilitative strategies will be included as they relate to clinical practice. Prerequisite: CMSD 0. This course addresses the differentiation between normal language development and disordered language. Disorders in the areas of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics will be discussed. Participants will apply theoretical principles of language development to the assessment and treatment of language disorders. The connection between language and literacy including the role of the speech-language pathologist will be discussed. This course is required for CMSD majors.
Prerequisite: CMSD-315, CMSD-320, CMSD-350, CMSD-360 This course will address assessment and treatment principles, methods and procedures relating to speech, language and hearing disorders. This course is required for CMSD majors.
Prerequisite: CMSD-310, CMSD-220. This course will address the anatomy and physiology of the human ear and the process of hearing. The basic principles of hearing assessment and characteristics of hearing disorders across the lifespan will be discussed. Participants will develop familiarity with the procedures and instrumentation used to measure human hearing and speech perception. This course is required for CMSD majors.

Evidence-based practice will be emphasized, and students may have the opportunity to participate in designing and implementing clinical research projects. This course is required for CMSD majors.
Prerequisite: CMSD-410. A study of professional terminology, classification, etiologies, symptomologies, and appropriate therapy procedures used with individuals having specific communication disorders. The course is required for CMSD majors.
