Graduate Certificate Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders

Applicants must possess a baccalaureate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applications are accepted for the fall semester, with a priority deadline of May 1. However, the department offering the Capstone Certificate program makes the final admission decision upon review of all applicant materials.

An online application for admission as a University Special student, selecting UNCS Capstone Certificate and the program: Communication Sciences and Disorders. This application is received and processed by ACSSS with final decision held for approval from the specific capstone certificate coordinator.

Notification of acceptance to the program will be sent within four weeks of receiving an application.

The Communication Sciences and Disorders will send specific information pertaining to enrollment in courses for fall and completion of the capstone program.

The certificate is earned upon completion of the nine courses, to be completed in one academic year. The minimum number of credits required for the certificate is 18.

Courses in which a student elects the pass fail or audit option will not count toward completion of Capstone Certificate requirements.

All of the Capstone Certificate credits must be earned in residence (which includes on campus and distance-delivered courses) at UW-Madison.

The Interdisciplinary Certificate Program in Early Intervention was developed in response to state and national needs to prepare personnel to serve infants and toddlers with disabilities, or who are at risk for developmental delays, and their families.

The EI specialization may be pursued as an independent certificate program, or integrated into a graduate program in speech-language pathology and audiology, school psychology, counseling psychology, or physical therapy. Personnel who work in the EI field may pursue the certificate program in the context of their employment.

As a result, students experience the team approach that is current practice in the field. Completion of the program leads to the required state certification for early intervention personnel at the advanced provisional level.

Because the program is interdisciplinary, scheduling of courses is done in such a way as to make it available to as many programs as possible.

The practicum requires 300 hours of field experience in a MA DPH certified EI program. Field training usually takes place over two semesters, unless it is embedded into one semester of a discipline-specific degree program.

The program is approved by the Massachusetts Public Health for certification as an Early Intervention Specialist, and is the only approved interdisciplinary program in the state.

The FSU School of Communication Science Disorders Interdepartmental Developmental Disabilities Certificate program provides students with a foundation of knowledge regarding etiology, treatment and policy issues related to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families through a 12-credit hour certificate program.

This certificate program will enable students to be better prepared for professional endeavors and community interactions with people with disabilities. The certificate provides background knowledge for careers in professions such as education, communication science and disorders, physical therapy, occupational therapy, family counseling and nursing.

In order to be a good clinician one needs good critical thinking skills to know take decisions that are going to help our patients change their communication skills as quickly and as thoroughly as possible because they are coming to us because they want change.

Within a five-year time period, students seeking the certificate must satisfy 9 credit hours of coursework and 3 credit hours of practicum from the approved list of courses, and complete 45 hours of service learning at an approved practicum sites.

than 20 courses are available in the following disciplines: Art Education, Communication Science Disorders, Family and Child Sciences, Middle Secondary Education, Music Education Therapy, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and School of Teacher Education.

Practicum placement is limited and based on availability of sites within the community each semester. The number of placements will vary. Following completion of all three courses, a transcript must be submitted to the Program Coordinator and verified. To ensure timely completion, verification that coursework is completed must be submitted at least two semesters prior to graduation. Students are placed on the waiting list after verification of coursework. While generally students are placed on the wait list on a first come, first serve basis, graduation dates are factored into the determination of practicum placement. The Program Coordinator assigns placements specific sites may not be requested.

The certificate program consists of twelve (12) credit hours to include: A core course (3 hours), two elective courses (6 hours) and participation in a practicum course (3 hours).

The student must maintain a 3.0 in the certificate coursework (at least a B in each course).

PLEASE NOTE: Students must complete the nine hours of classroom credit in three different departments.

The three (3) credit hour practicum course is comprised of 45 hours of volunteer service learning hours to be completed at an off-campus placement with individuals with developmental disabilities. 3-5 hours of volunteer service will be expected for each of the 15 weeks of the semester. The practicummust be completed over a full semester (Fall, Spring, or Summer Session A only).

This placement is arranged through the Certificate Program Coordinator and will be determined on the first day of class.

The practicum is a hybrid course.

The certificate program consists of twelve (12) credit hours to include: a core course (3 hours), two additional courses in other departments (6 hours) and participation in a practicum course (3 hours). Students cannot participate in the practicum until classroom coursework is completed with a 3.0 GPA in all 3 courses. Practicum placement is limited, so please application as soon as possible.PLEASE NOTE: Students must complete the nine hours of classroom credit in three different departments. The following courses are GENERALLY offered in the terms that are listed.

Please note that a majority of these courses are NOT offered by the School of Communication Science Disorders.

Students should initiate course enrollment no later than the first semester of their junior year in order to ensure timely completion. Classes are offered during each semester throughout the academic year, however, not every course is taught each semester.

We prefer that students apply prior to the 7th week of classes during the term of their first course applicable to the certificate requirements. We will notify the Registrar that the student has applied for participation in the IDD Certificate.

The registrar will no longer approve students completing the certificate AFTER the second course because of a University rule. This ensures that when you complete the practicum your certificate will be posted on your transcript.

You must have completed NO THAN ONE class before submitting your application! Application will open for the summer semester on May 21, 2024, and will close on July 26, 2024. The next window will open in Fall 2024.

This certificate program is a post-baccalaureate graduate-level clinical training program designed to prepare students for a career in public schools as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA). Students who successfully complete the program will be immediately eligible for SLPA national certification and state licensure. The program is an intensive program offered over the course of 1 semester. A total of 15 credit hours are required, of which 3 are didactic and 12 are clinical experiences.

Online format. This section is geared towards prospective students who are not able to attend the program in person. Specifically, it aims to support applicants from rural areas and who live outside of the Wasatch Front. Externships are NOT offered in counties listed in the Fall Semester Section.

A final grade of no lower than a B in all program coursework is required for successful completion.

A bachelor degree from a Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) program that is part of an accredited institution program (i.e. matriculated students).

A bachelor degree in another field of study other than CSD and have completed all University of Utah CSD and Allied Heath required coursework prior to applying to the SLPA program (i.e. non-matriculated students).

All individuals accepted into the SLPA program will receive an automatic CSD department scholarship in the amount of $2,200.

All individuals accepted into the SLPA program will receive automatic funding that is supported by the program Community Engaged Learning (CEL) designation in the amount of $300.

This course will explore the language, culture, history, and contemporary issues of American Deaf people. Utilizing readings, lecture, and group discussion students will learn the linguistic and cultural aspect, oppression, timeline of deaf history, communication strategies and their effectiveness in terms of learning a language, as well as issues that are still existing in the deaf community.

This course is a continuation of Advanced knowledge in American Sign Language. Fluent, social and academic use and understanding of sign language will be explored as well as continued expansion of knowledge of Deaf Culture and Deaf Community.

Prerequisite: CMSD-210. This course will address the science behind assessment and treatment in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. Participants will apply the basic concepts underlying the production and analysis of speech sounds to clinical practice. This course is required for CMSD majors.

Prerequisite: BIOL 101, BIOL 102 This course will address anatomy, neuroanatomy, and physiology of the human speech mechanism. Course content includes upper body skeletal, muscular, respiratory, and nervous systems. The focus of the speech mechanism in relation to respiration, phonation, resonation, and articulation will be examined in depth as it relates to the field of communication sciences and disorders. Prerequisite: CMSD-210. This course is designed to provide an of typical American English language development, including major American dialects. Child language is placed in the context of social, motor, and cognitive development from birth through adolescence. Emphasis is placed on the crucial relationship between language development and literacy acquisition. Participants use basic language observation and analysis techniques to explore phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics and pragmatics. This course is required for CMSD majors.

Prerequisite: CMSD-210, CMSD 310. This course will provide participants with a scientific understanding of the nature of phonological and articulatory disorders. Assessment and treatment of speech sound disorders will be addressed to help participants apply this knowledge to clinical situations. The course will provide participants with the knowledge of the normal aspects of articulatory and phonological development and theories of phonological development. Identification of articulation and phonological disorders, interpret assessment findings, intervention approaches and facilitative strategies will be included as they relate to clinical practice. This course is required for CMSD majors.

Prerequisite: CMSD 0. This course addresses the differentiation between normal language development and disordered language. Disorders in the areas of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics will be discussed. Participants will apply theoretical principles of language development to the assessment and treatment of language disorders. The connection between language and literacy including the role of the speech-language pathologist will be discussed. This course is required for CMSD majors.

Prerequisite: CMSD-315, CMSD-320, CMSD-350, CMSD-360 This course will address assessment and treatment principles, methods and procedures relating to speech, language and hearing disorders. This course is required for CMSD majors.

Prerequisite: CMSD-310, CMSD-220. This course will address the anatomy and physiology of the human ear and the process of hearing. The basic principles of hearing assessment and characteristics of hearing disorders across the lifespan will be discussed. Participants will develop familiarity with the procedures and instrumentation used to measure human hearing and speech perception. This course is required for CMSD majors.

Prerequisite: CMSD-100, CMSD-210, CMSD-220, CMSD-310, CMSD-315,CMSD-320, CMSD 0, CMSD-350, CMSD-360 Students will participate in a practicum experience assisting graduate clinicians with fully licensed clinical supervisor(s) consistent with the requirements for becoming a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLP-A) in the State of Missouri. Support will be provided for graduate school applications and preparation. Evidence-based practice will be emphasized, and students may have the opportunity to participate in designing and implementing clinical research projects. This course is required for CMSD majors.

Prerequisite: CMSD-410. A study of professional terminology, classification, etiologies, symptomologies, and appropriate therapy procedures used with individuals having specific communication disorders. The course is required for CMSD majors.

While most courses are designed to be completed in half of a semester (8 weeks), CMSD 310, CMSD 410, and CMSD 480 take a full semester (16 weeks) to complete.
