The doctoral program in Community Psychology emphasizes an ecological perspective focusing on structural inequality and social justice. Students take courses on structural determinants of inequality, critical perspectives on psychological research, program evaluation, prevention and intervention, and quantitative and qualitative methods. Students complete a mandatory community field laboratory in which students work collaboratively on a project with community partners. Students typically develop expertise in at least one other area of psychology, often developmental, social or clinical psychology, or in another discipline such as education. Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology manages three counseling clinics, which offer support to the Pepperdine and external communities.

In addition to the Community Counseling Clinics, GSEP also provides counseling services to the less community at the Los Angeles Union Rescue Mission.

The counseling clinics are staffed by Pepperdine master and doctoral-level interns who are trained and supervised by licensed psychologists. The clinics offer a wide range of high-quality, affordable psychological services to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, as well as couples and families. Evaluations and therapy plans are specifically tailored for each individual client.

Students will select and use appropriate assessment tools and methods, effectively conduct clinical interviews, and write integrated, systems-based assessment reports and case conceptualizations. Students will appropriately implement and evaluate evidence-based interventions in applied work. Students effectively gives and receives feedback from supervisors. A minimum of 69 credit hours of course and practica work and 12 hours of dissertation work (PSYC 899) are required beyond the baccalaureate degree. Course work is distributed across five categories with a minimum number of credits in each category.

DePaul’s Community Psychology MA/PhD program will equip students with the skills and research methodologies necessary for a career as a researcher, educator, interventional specialist, consultant and program evaluator. The program emphasizes human diversity, specializing in research and intervention work with underserved communities.

The Community Psychology MA/PhD is a combined degree program. The MA is non-terminal and the program admits only students intending to earn the PhD. Classes are offered during the day on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus and the program can be completed in five years.

For the MA portion of the program, you’ll take 12 classes and complete a master’s thesis. For the PhD portion, you’ll take seven classes and complete fieldwork projects and a dissertation.

The Ph.D. Program in Clinical-Community Psychology is a scientist-practitioner program in clinical psychology that seeks to educate scholars and clinicians, who have strong commitments to research, evaluation, clinical practice, and community-based action, solidly grounded in the cultural contexts of all affected stakeholders.
