Crucially, computational linguistics is at the nexus of computer science, information science and linguistics: the skills and expertise most sought by companies that hire people with training in computational linguistics or natural language processing is generally not attainable within a purely computer information science or purely linguistics program.
Computational Linguistics provides students who wish to work in the areas of machine translation, machine learning, speech-to-text software, natural language processing, natural language generation, and artificial intelligence with an understanding of human language structure and the skills of linguistic analysis as well as the computational tools to develop software applications to parse and generate human language.
The Certificate in Computational Linguistics is available to currently enrolled graduate students in Linguistics, Computer Science, or Information Science, and in related areas (e.g., Speech and Hearing Sciences, Communication, Statistics, Digital Curation and Management, among others). In addition, this program is available to non-degree-seeking students who have appropriate background.
Students complete 9 credit hours (3 courses) and attend a monthly brown bag seminar for the duration of their time in the program.
Students enrolled in, or who have background in Linguistics must take at least two courses from:.
Students enrolled in, or who have background in Computer Science or Information Science must take at least two courses from:.
Non-degree-seeking students will take one or two Linguistics and one or two Computer Science Information Science courses to complement their prior expertise. For degree students, one course for the Certificate can also count towards their degree program. In addition, students participate in a monthly brown bag seminar that features talks by computational linguists from academia and industry.
Note: non-degree-seeking students must additionally apply for registration through the Friday Center using the forms for Continuing Education.

We offer two graduate certificate programs in Linguistics: a GRS Graduate Certificate in Linguistics (through the Graduate School of Arts Sciences, GRS) for current BU graduate students looking to complement their graduate study in another field, and a MET Graduate Certificate in Linguistics (through Metropolitan College, MET) for others looking to get some background in Linguistics (e.g., students contemplating further graduate study of linguistics at BU or elsewhere, professionals in related fields working in the Boston area).
Students entering either certificate program are expected to have an introductory background equivalent to one introductory course in Linguistics. Students who do not have this background can register for, or audit, CAS LX 250 or acquire equivalent knowledge.
The GRS Graduate Certificate in Linguistics offers the opportunity for students to gain knowledge Linguistics to complement their primary area of study, and to explore possible interconnections between Linguistics and their primary field. This will enhance their graduate education, as well as provide a credential that may be useful for their future professional pursuits. Students interested in earning the certificate must be in good standing in their doctoral program at BU.
The certificate is awarded under the auspices of the Graduate School of Arts Sciences (GRS). Normal GRS tuition rates apply. However, there is no additional cost to fully-funded PhD students for taking these courses.
Students who complete the GRS Certificate in Linguistics will be able to demonstrate:.
An understanding of the fundamental questions that drive modern linguistic theory, along with foundational knowledge in the core areas of linguistics.
The MET Graduate Certificate in Linguistics is designed for students with a BA degree who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in linguistics, but who do not have the necessary background in linguistics. This certificate prepares students to submit applications to MA or PhD programs at BU or elsewhere.
Note that completion of the certificate is not a guarantee of admission to BU graduate programs. However, should a student enter the BU Linguistics MA program upon completion of this certificate, the elective course required for the certificate will count retroactively towards the MA degree requirements.
Students who complete the MET Certificate in Linguistics will be able to demonstrate:.

Certificate in Iroquois Linguistics College of Professional Studies.
The Iroquois language family is a group of distinct but closely related languages. Six are spoken by the Haudenosaunee Confederacy: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora. These languages share a common grammatical structure and cultural history and this program explores their commonalities and differences.
The Certificate in Iroquois Linguistics (CIL) provides an opportunity to study linguistic principles and grammatical features unique to the Iroquois languages, with examples from the six Haudenosaunee languages.
The courses are designed for students and teachers of Iroquois languages, as well as linguists, anthropologists, and others who support the revitalization of Iroquois languages.
I highly recommend this course to any Haudenosaunee who value their culture, and I plan to use this knowledge of formal linguistics for the rest of my life. John Logan Oneida Wolf Clan, Oneida, NY.
The certificate can be completed in one year by taking two courses in the fall and spring, and the capstone course in the summer. These courses are a combination of in-class and online instruction.
NAT 302: Iroquois Verb Morphology II (3 credits)Analyze the Iroquois verb. Introduction to the morphological structure common to all Iroquois languages. This is the second course in a two-part series. Prerequisite: NAT 301.
Percy Abrams, Ph.D., is a member of the Eel Clan of the Onondaga Nation. He earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2005, and specializes in the morphology and phonology of the Iroquois languages.

The Graduate Certificate in Computational Linguistics at the Montclair State University gives students basic training in computational Linguistics interdisciplinarity. Computational Linguistics Computer linguists develop tools for the person's interface with the computer, such as blogs and news articles, citizen journalism and social interactions, web research and online booking systems, smart library catalogues and foreign language learning, spoken language interaction and the discovery of knowledge.
This program allows students to understand CL's main algorithms and data structures, symbolic and statistical methods, as well as their suitable application. Automated text summary, machine translation, named entities recognition (determining which items are in a text map and what is their name – individual, place, organisation and so on), natural language generation (converting computer database information into readable human language), natural language understanding (converting chunks of text into more formal representations that are easier for computer programmes to manipulate).

The Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Computational Linguistics is designed to provide academic training in the study of computational approaches to language analysis. The curriculum assumes no prior linguistic or programming knowledge and introduces students to a variety of computational methods and their theoretical underpinnings including: writing programs in Python to process raw texts (tokenization), discovering statistical patterns in linguistic data (frequency distribution), performing part-of-speech tagging, text segmentation, and classification (context-free grammars, dependency grammars), extracting meaning from texts, and applying various machine learning methods to data mining. Computational tools are supported by a strong foundation in linguistic theory including natural language syntax, semantics, and metaphor identification.
