The Graduate Certificate in Correctional Rehabilitation provides a better understanding of correctional rehabilitation, and specifically the use of evidence based programs and practices designed to reduce recidivism. Students are given the opportunity to apply important skills in working with corrections populations. Upon completion of the certificate, students will be well-versed in many principles and practices used in correctional settings that provide rehabilitative services to offenders. These include probation and parole, prisons, jails, community based correctional facilities, halfway houses and group s, day reporting centers, reentry programs and other correctional settings.

The Certificate in Correctional Rehabilitation is a specialization within the UC School of Criminal Justice that provides a deeper and comprehensive understanding of the risk, need and responsivity model of offender treatment. Students obtaining a certificate in correctional rehabilitation can take a variety of courses focused on important aspects of the juvenile and adult correctional systems.

Students will describe the nature of the rehabilitative ideal and how it shaped American corrections.

Students will analyze the research evidence on competing theories of corrections and individual treatment of offenders.

Students will analyze components of effective correctional treatments, policies, and strategies.

Students will apply various approaches to correctional assessment and effective intervention.

Students will analyze the impact of correctional policy and treatment on various sub-populations, including racial and ethnic minority groups and offenders with substance use disorders and mental health needs.

Students already enrolled in the Criminal Justice Master of Science program must be in good academic standing according to the School of Criminal Justice and Graduate School Handbooks.

Prospective students should complete the UC Graduate School online application for admission. It is the applicant responsibility to ensure that all required materials and support documents are successfully submitted. Incomplete applications will not be processed or reviewed.

A baccalaureate degree (any major) from an accredited institution.

Upon completion of the certificate, students will be prepared to work in correctional settings that provide rehabilitative services to offenders. These include probation and parole, prisons, jails, community based correctional facilities, halfway houses and group s, day reporting centers, reentry programs and other correctional settings. A certificate in correctional rehabilitation equips students with the necessary theoretical, empirical, and practical foundation to work with, manage, and or study offenders in correctional treatment settings.

International Students must submit TOEFL scores in alignment with the Graduate School requirements.

Corrections refers to the branch of the criminal justice system that deals with individuals who have been convicted of a crime. The Corrections Certificate will provide the opportunity for students to explore this unique subsystem of the justice system by (a) examining the historical issues and penological development that shaped contemporary corrections (b) evaluating constitutional and ethical issues inside and outside the correctional system. It is also designed to help prepare future leaders to grasp and resolve institutional, ethical, and operational issues and work collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

The certificate in corrections requires 18 credit hours of coursework.

The Evidence-Based Practices in Corrections Certificate prepares students for working with justice-involved individuals. Developed in partnership with the Hennepin County Community Corrections and Rehabilitation, this one-semester program provides the training and empirical basis for the techniques and tools used by correctional professionals in the field. Students gain the expertise they need to help facilitate changes in behavior, including:.

Understand the relationship between academic knowledge and the practical application of that knowledge in working with the justice-involved client.

Examine the research behind cognitive behavioral interventions (CBI) and what it looks like in the field of corrections, including facilitating CBI groups.

For students not concurrently enrolled in the Criminal Justice BA program, students must have at least one year of post-secondary education or one year of relevant experience in corrections or a related human services field to enter the program, and there is an application process for admittance.

Note: Each EBP certificate cohort is limited to approximately 20 students. Students must obtain access to observe a correctional group, which may include passing a criminal background check.

To earn the professional certificate, which the Hennepin County Community Corrections and Rehabilitation will treat as equivalent to one full year of work experience, students must pass each of the required four courses with at least a B. To earn just directive elective credit towards the Criminal Justice BA, students must pass each of the required four courses with at least a C-.

Students must take the required four courses concurrently in the same semester because the content is presented consecutively, which is unique.

Special permission is required to register for these courses. Criminal Justice majors may apply these credits to their required directed electives.

This course will introduce students to the history, practice and theory of Evidence-based Practice in the field of corrections criminal justice. Students will explore the principles of effective intervention through highly interactive activities and discussion. Students will discuss and identify personal goals to enhance professional effectiveness.

This course focuses on the applications of risk needs assessment tools that are the foundation on which a case plan is created with the justice involved client. The students will be familiarized with the research and history from which the tools have been derived.

The goal in corrections is to reduce risk of reoffending and help clients change their thinking and behavior. This course utilizes strategies within a case planning process by addressing criminogenic needs that most effectively protect the public and effect change in the client criminal behavior. This will teach you a process for creating initial case plans in partnership with clients, as well as a process for ongoing case plan development.

This course introduces students to basic counseling skills to be used with clients dealing with a variety of issues including family challenges and substance use disorders. As such, it is designed to help students develop essential helping skills needed for client engagement, follow-through, completion and overall therapeutic effectiveness. It includes examination and practice Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, techniques central to helping others across a range of issues including substance use disorders. Specific skills covered include developing rapport, building empathy and active listening, encouraging trust, self-disclosure, immediacy, questioning and evoking, addressing discrepancies, etc. This course is highly experiential in its format. Students will participate in classroom exercises, role plays, and video-taping and self-assessment of counseling skills.
