With programs designed for both new teachers and experienced teachers, we provide opportunities for students holding bachelor’s degrees who are interested in pursuing graduate study in education.

Students wishing to work in New York City must also obtain New York City licensure. You are eligible for a provisional certificate upon completion of the program along with all pre-certification requirements (see the Student Handbook for details), and it is valid for 5 years. During that time, you must obtain two years of practical experience, and afterward, you can apply via the NYSED-TEACH online system for permanent certification (which requires no further maintenance).Please note that requirements are always subject to change as the result of changes in city and state policy. UPDATES: The application for the spring start of the International School Counseling certificate will open by September 20, 2023. The priority deadline has been pushed back from September 15th to October 15th. The final deadline will remain November 15th.

This program is designed for educators in international schools who want to advance their skills and knowledge to promote the social and emotional well-being of students inside and outside the classroom. The fall course combines social-emotional counseling with career and college counseling for holistic support.

Schools generally are seeing children who are dealing with stress and mental health issues, and staff are frequently called on to be part of solutions to prevent problems from turning into something critical.

The program attracts a very diverse group of educators with a wide range of backgrounds who enrich the curriculum by sharing their experiences.

Certificate students can apply for the M.Ed. in International School Counseling during their certificate program or upon completion. If admitted into the master degree, the certificate classes will automatically count towards the master degree.

Students can start the certificate in the spring or summer terms. In-person classes are held in Bethlehem Pennsylvania or in an international location during the Summer Institute. Students may choose to spread out their classes over than one year if a slower pace through the program is better suited to their needs.

The graduate certificate in Counseling Life Transitions equips students with a range of skills that can be used to assist the community in coping with the different transitions that may occur in their lives. Students may choose to focus in one of three concentrations: Career Workforce Development, Grief, Loss Life Transition, and Counseling Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Persons.

Career Workforce Development: This certificate prepares career practitioners to assist students, workers, employers, and retirees navigate the challenges that are inherent in a global workplace.

To better understand cultural and linguistic diversity within the workplace, school, and community settings, and, in the process, enhance their understanding of their own psycho-social identity.

The School Counseling certificate program requires 30 graduate credits. It can be completed full-time in two semesters, or taken part-time for students who are also working full time.

This program typically includes 12-30 credits towards that requirements, depending on previous counseling experience and graduate coursework.

Students must also complete a special project, typical as part of one of their courses.

If they earn at least a B (3.0) in the first three credit hours of coursework, they will be admitted to the certificate program.

These two main points serve as a great way to begin the GCCE program with registration for either Orientation to Professional Counseling, Identity, and Ethics (Summer II) or Multicultural Lifespan Development (Fall). If there are available seats throughout the rest of the academic year, it might be possible for a few students to begin the GCCE program during Summer 1 or Spring semesters.

Award of the GCCE requires a minimum overall GPA of B (3.0) in certificate program courses. None of the courses may be taken for credit only. No transfer credits from other institutions are allowed for the certificate. All students must be registered through NC State University. All GCCE requirements must be completed within four calendar years. All certificate students are expected to maintain continuous enrollment every semester (excluding summer sessions) until all course work is completed.

The GCCE program provides basic counseling and communication skills, multicultural skills and training in advocacy and support that can be applied in schools, communities and other settings. It is designed for individuals who desire to help others individually or in groups on their academic, emotional, behavioral, career and contextual challenges.

The School Counseling EdM program seeks to educate individuals who will utilize learned skills, abilities, knowledge and attitudes in order to assist youth in educational settings to cope with developmental and remedial tasks involving educational, vocational and personal-social needs. Graduates of the school counseling program are expected to be able to apply a diverse repertoire of helping strategies and techniques, conceptualize and implement a comprehensive program of school counseling services, and engage in evaluation of their efforts.
