The online M.Ed. in human development counseling with a specialization in school counseling is a 48-credit-hour program and can be completed in three years.

Live classes are held weekly, Monday through Thursday, and are mandatory. Classes may begin as early as 4 p.m. CT.

Students must attend two on-campus immersions and are required to complete three internships. These internships will take place during school hours and require extensive training. Because of this, students will not be able to work at another job full time during regular weekday hours while completing their internships. Students are also not able to complete the internship at a school in which they are employed.

Students in the M.Ed. with a school counseling specialization program will:.

Approval of transfer credits to the Ed.M. program must be conducted upon admission into the program transfer credits will not be accepted thereafter. Students who program during or after taking classes at Teachers College as a non-matriculated student can transfer up to 12 points if accepted as a matriculated degree student.

Lehigh Master of Education degree in International School Counseling is designed for students living outside the United States who work at international schools with students from different countries, including the United States.

The hybrid program has online asynchronous and synchronous classes during the school year and in-person classes during the Summer Institute in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania or in an international location. Pennsylvania certification can be transferred to other states with or without additional requirements. International students may be able to receive certification in other states and should inquire with the states directly. Starting in 2025, new students will be required to attend a Summer Institute in Pennsylvania to receive a recommendation from Lehigh for certification in Pennsylvania. This is not a requirement for students applying for certification in other states.

The course of study prepares students to work with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds and developmental stages, helping them to gain skills for living in a complex society. Students learn help children and families navigate the transitions they face living in a culture different from their own.

The M.Ed. starts once a year in winter and requires the completion of 16 courses (48 credits). A typical course load of one or two courses in the fall, one during winter intersession, one or two in the spring, and three in the summer enables students to complete the program in two to three years. Students may choose to move through the program at a slower pace if that better suits their needs.

Practical experience is an important part of the degree with students expected to complete a minimum of 100 hours of fieldwork. The culminating experience is two semesters of an internship of 15-20 hours a week. The internship must be completed at a school outside of the US. If needed, students can take a break in their studies while they secure a volunteer or paid internship.

In addition to the traditional core of developmental theory and the associated design and implementation of preventive interventions, the program also provides the opportunity to explore clinical counseling theory and practice.

Competence in both theory and practice is emphasized. Students participate in individualized field experiences in K-12 schools in North Carolina. In light of our commitment to multicultural diversity, we are particularly interested in attracting students from culturally diverse backgrounds. In recent years, we have increased the proportion of culturally different students from less than 5% to almost 20% of our degree candidates. Our curriculum content acknowledges the significance of cross-cultural perspectives in counseling theory, research, and practice.
