The program in Community Dance emphasizes the creative process as a form of collaboration, through which dance can be an adaptable, inclusive, socially relevant practice. The Graduate Certificate in Community Dance prepares professionals ready to create and lead community dance projects focused on wellness, health, education, activism, or other initiatives. Courses include studio practice in dance technique and composition theoretical, practical, and historical investigations of dance as a community form dance research and project planning. This program harnesses the resources of the School of Dance BFA and BA programs, which create a rich culture of studio practice and performance in which graduate students can deepen their understanding of their art form while developing professional competencies as arts administrators and leaders. This is a 12-credit hour, stackable certificate program.

Students will evaluate, critique, and synthesize scholarship on community dance practices.

Students will refine proficiency in dance-movement practices.

Students will create and lead dance experiences that foster community and enhance civic responsibility.

Community dance integrates arts learning and participation into the lives of children, seniors, youth, and other populations. Graduates of the Certificate in Community Dance will understand the artistic discipline of dance as well as bring dance to a diverse range of communities.

This certificate is intended for degree-seeking graduate students. Transfer credits may not be applied to the certificate.

Each student will carry a full-time load in dance and transcripts will reflect the credits earned in courses taken at Belhaven.

The program size is limited to 10 positions. Admission will only be granted at the beginning of the fall semester.

The certificate program in dance requires 21-24 credit hours and takes two consecutive semesters to complete, with some flexibility to facilitate appropriate substitutions.

The certificate is not the equivalent of a major in dance.

Students who complete the dance certificate program after 24 credit hours and who wish to enter the traditional program may be eligible for scholarships on the same basis as any other transfer student applying for admission to the traditional program. The transfer GPA will be based on the credits earned while in the dance certificate program as well as on any additional college-level credits.

The dance certificate is available to all majors in all disciplines and professionals or educators seeking a certificate to develop their skill and knowledge in the area of dance. This certification will also prepare the student for the TExES ExCET exam required to teach dance in the Texas public school system.

Students obtaining a certificate in dance will demonstrate the technical, historical, cultural and choreographic dimensions of dance. Specifically the student will have the ability to:.

Develop relationships with world dance cultures and choreographic elements.

Demonstrate competencies in ballet, jazz and modern dance technique.

In order to receive a Dance Certificate, 15 semester hours with at least 9 semester hours in residence is required.

DANC 1141 Ballet I (1 sem. hr.) A beginning ballet dance course aligned with the Theatre, Dance, and Musical Theatre disciplines. The student will learn fundamentals of classical ballet terminology, alignment, barre and floor technique, as well as genres of the contemporary styles. May be repeated for credit.

DANC 1147 Jazz Dance I (1 sem. hr.) A beginning jazz dance course aligned with the Theatre, Dance, and Musical Theatre disciplines. Students will be introduced to genres of the jazz dance from primitive ritual through contemporary musical theatre compositions. May be repeated for credit.

DANC 1148 Modern Dance I (1 sem. hr.) A beginning modern dance course aligned with the Theatre, Dance, and Musical Theatre disciplines. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of Modern Dance using a variety of modern dance styles, including technique, progressive movement and dance performance. May be repeated for credit.

DANC 1304 Dance In Performance (3 sem. hrs.) Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of choreography using a variety of dance styles and, using those skills, create dance intended for public performance. May be repeated for credit.

DANC 03 World Dance and Culture (3 sem. hrs.) Offers a cross cultural and historical view of a variety of theatrical, vernacular and sacred dance forms and investigates ways that dance functions across societies. No background in dance is necessary to successfully complete this course.

DANC 06 Dance Composition (3 sem. hrs.) Introduction to basic techniques and principles of the craft and art of choreography. Solo and duet choreography expected.

DANC 4306 Dance Composition II (3 sem. hrs.) Demonstrate choreographic tools in the dance making process as it relates to group work explore and create movement studies in groups as it pertains to art. Prerequisite: DANC 06 Dance Composition I.
