The Demography Certificate Program at The University of Utah is designed for graduate students, especially those majoring in the social and health sciences. It is also designed for non-matriculated students seeking to enhance their skill set in demography. Students enroll in a sequence of courses which provide an of methods, materials and issues in demography. The certificate will complement many degree programs, especially sociology, economics, geography, public health, public policy and interdisciplinary social sciences. Students who wish to enroll may apply any certificate courses which they have already completed, providing that the grade earned for any such course is at least C-.

Matriculated graduate students should take courses at the 6000 level, nonmatriculated students can take courses at the 5000 or 6000 level.

Introductory multivariate statistics, through linear regression, preferrably with exposure to statistical software, is a prerequisite for the certificate program.

Once you have completed all of the requirements for the Certificate, please send us the Completion Form.

Graduate Multivariate Statistics (usually offered spring semester) FCS 5110 or 6110.

Other graduate level statistics class that covers multiple regression. Proof of passing grade (C-or better) and copy of syllabus will have to be submitted to the program manager for approval.

The Certificate in Demography is a graduate program designed both for students currently enrolled in graduate programs in social science or public policy areas and for members of the community, such as state employees. The program prepares students with theoretical, substantive, and methodological knowledge of how population processes (e.g., fertility, mortality, and migration) operate in societies and how they interrelate with other social processes. The program is under the guidance of the Graduate Committee in Sociology.

The Certificate in Demography is a self standing program of 18 credit hours. However, it may also be undertaken in conjunction with M.A., M.S., or Ph.D. programs.

The requirements for the certificate program consists of 18 credits of course work as follows:.

Two core courses: Soc 551 Introduction to Demography and Soc 552 Demographic Techniques .

Two courses (topics) from Soc 665 Special Topics in Demography (which may be repeated) or one from Soc 665 plus Soc 607 Demography Internships .

Two additional courses from either Soc 665 or other demography related courses (see brochure for a suggested list of courses.) .

Additionally, students must have taken one graduate-level statistics course in a related field.

Please note: This program requires an internship, field experience, study abroad component, or clinical experience requirement.
