Graduate Certificate Programs in Dental Public Health and Education

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Dental Public Health.

Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine provides a one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) residency program for individuals interested in careers in dental public health. Dentists who hold a CEPH-accredited Master of Public Health degree, or equivalent, are eligible to apply. Dentists without these degrees are encouraged to apply for the Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD) in Dental Public Health and CAGS at Boston University. The CAGS program is designed to fulfill the residency eligibility of the American Board of Dental Public Health.

The educational goal of the Dental Public Health (DPH) residency program is to prepare graduates to become leaders in the practice of DPH. In addition, all residents are required to complete one or dental public health projects and participate in field experience in DPH.

Completion is not tracked by credit accumulation but by successful completion of individual courses and duration requirements.

The School of Dental Medicine Certificate in Dental Public Health program enrolls a select number of Pitt Dental Medicine students who have an interest in social public policy and community service programs, with a focus on community-based oral health. The certificate is awarded to each student who has completed 15 units of coursework (six units will be designated as shared credited SCOPE participation), including a mix of experiential learning and didactic coursework. Requirements of the program include a practicum, where the student will develop and or engage in a community health program.

Pre-doctoral dental students (generally 10-15 students per class) are admitted to the Certificate Program during the spring semester of year-one and no later than the end of their second year. Admission is based upon review of personal goals, grades, and interview.

A minimum Pitt Dental Medicine GPA of 3.3 at the time of application. Maintenance of academic grade point of 3.3.

Contemporary Issues in Dental Public Health (CDENT 5916) 2 credits (Drs. Rubin Balakrishnan).

Dental Public Health Policy and Advocacy (CDENT 5930) 1 credit (Drs. Balakrishnan Rubin).

Certificate in Dental Public Health is earned when 15-17 total credits have been earned in accordance with the program requirements.

This residency program allows you to explore various community programs and initiatives necessary to promote oral health and prevent and control dental diseases, such as.

Assessments of oral health status and need for care,.

Program evaluations to achieve community health goals, and.

Use of scientific knowledge to influence oral health policy.

Students will learn to evaluate and tackle an expansive range of dental public health issues presented in the surrounding patient population and in target communities served by our affiliated organizations.

The program will also provide residents with the educational preparation needed to.

Become eligible to take and pass the American Board of Dental Public Health (ABDPH) and achieve diplomate status .

Design, conduct and lead dental public health research projects and.

This certificate program adheres to the guidelines of the ABDPH and is designed to allow dentists with the Master of Public Health to complete the educational requirements for board certification as a specialist in dental public health.

The DPH Residency will start on July 1st, 2024. Candidates applying to the DPH program are also invited to apply for conditional early acceptance to the Temple AEGD 1-year program.

The Dental Public Health Graduate Certificate can be completed on either a full or part-time basis. Students enrolled full time typically take one year to complete the certificate, while students enrolled part time can take two to three years to graduate.

The program curriculum is designed so that students come to understand not just the science, but also the art behind preventing and controlling dental diseases and promoting oral and general health through various community efforts.

The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Education.

The Commission on Dental Accreditation has accredited the program in Dental Public Health. However, accreditation of the program does not in itself constitute recognition of any dental specialty status.
