Emphasis is placed on training clinicians who are competent in all aspects of endodontics, so that they will be eligible for certification by the American Board of Endodontics. Candidates will also be required to complete an M.S.D. (Master of Science in Dentistry College of Dental Medicine) program with an additional curriculum of core courses in the biomedical sciences. The curriculum is flexible enough to accommodate candidates desiring private practice as well as those interested in academics and research. The M.S.D. program is completed simultaneously with the clinical Certificate program, and there is no option for a Certificate only program. The combined M.S.D. and Certificate program is twenty-six (26) months duration and is the only track available. Students completing the program earn a specialty Certificate in Endodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry degree.

The certificate program in Endodontics is a 27-month graduate program, fully accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation, designed to be a comprehensive, didactic, clinical and research experience into all aspects of endodontics. The program provides the graduate student with the tools necessary to be a clinically proficient endodontist, an astute diagnostician, a critical thinker, and a sound endodontist-scientist. In addition, the program prepares the student for the American Board of Endodontics certification examination. An optional MS in Oral Biology is available through the Biomedical Sciences. Application is made through ApplyTexas. The MS requires the successful completion of an additional 32 semester credit hours, the completion of a research project, and the successful defense of a written thesis. Additional time in residence would be required if pursuing the Certificate and the MS in Oral Biology simultaneously. Must complete 27 months of residency, total credit hours specified, any noncredit courses specified, and be approved by the Promotions Committee for this certificate to be awarded. In accordance with Student Rule 10.4.1, grades of S or U may be assigned in certain officially designated certificate courses.

Students completing the program earn a specialty Certificate in Endodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry degree. The program conforms to the Standards for Advanced Specialty Education in Endodontics and carries a full approval status from the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. A written letter of professional intent or biographical statement that reflects the candidate’s desire to pursue the specialty and the intent upon receipt of the degree and certificate. In the last semester of the second year the resident will take a written and an oral comprehensive examination designed to evaluate the resident’s ability to integrate the didactic and clinical course material, demonstrate critical-thinking skills and demonstrate command of evidence-based endodontics. Both the written and oral examinations must be successfully completed to receive the specialty Certificate in Endodontics. The Certificate of Endodontics, conferred by the School of Dentistry, is only conferred upon completion and awarding of the Master of Science in Dentistry.
