The DScD will prepare students to successfully enter the field of academic dentistry for careers as clinical or basic science researchers.

DScD with Postgraduate Certificate Program: The Doctor of Science in Dentistry (DScD) program is tailored for each specialty. For Endodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Medicine, and Pediatric Dentistry postgraduate programs it is 5 years, for Periodontics 5.5 years and for Periodontic Prosthesis 6 years. Clinical, didactic, and research aspects of the program are integrated so that in all years students experience both clinical and research training. In years one and two, there is greater focus on clinical training, while in later years there is greater focus on research training with clinical activities continuing in all years. All courses taken as part of clinical training are credited toward the DScD degree. Each student will write a K08 or K23 grant award the application becomes the basis of a qualifying exam for the program. Only US citizens green card holders will actually submit their K08 or K23 proposal to the NIH. This represents important training in grant writing as well as training in writing a scientific paper for publication, both of which are important aspects of academic success.

PLEASENOTE: Acceptance into the specialty program does not guarantee acceptance into the DScD program.

DScD without Postgraduate Certificate Program: Students who have completed clinical specialty training at an accredited institution are eligible to apply for the Doctor of Science in Dentistry (DScD) program without certificate. This program is 4 years in length. Students in this program are associated with a clinical specialty and will take all didactic courses in the specialty as well as a dissertation project but will not receive clinical training. The didactic, research and dissertation components for this program are the same as those for the combined DScD Certificate program.

Students will give a 30-minute presentation of their work each summer as part of the Student Research Seminar series in Penn Dental Medicine and at the Penn Dental Medicine annual research retreat.

Total length of program: 5 years when combined with a specialty certificate program in Endodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Medicine and Pediatric Dentistry 5.5 years for Periodontics 6 years for Periodontics Prosthesis 4 years for DScD only without specialty certificateNumber of students accepted: 3 to 5 each year.

The integrated curriculum allows the student to earn a DDS degree and a PhD in Oral Biology in approximately seven years. Dentistry is designed for internationally trained dentists lacking a DMD or DDS issued by a dental teaching institution in the United States. The program familiarizes participants with predoctoral clinical and didactic education and the U.S. group practice structure while simultaneously providing the information and skills participants need for the participants to further their dental education.

The program combines clinical didactic and hands-on seminars with clinical observations.

Educational background and previous training in dentistry, demonstrated by a degree in dental medicine from a foreign institution.

Dentistry is full-time (Monday through Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) for one month.

The program will begin on the first Monday of each month.

The following months will host a Preceptor: January, February, March, August, September, October, and November.

It is required that all participants are present for the duration of the program. Participants are to sign-in each day. Sign-in sheets are kept with Continuing Education Coordinator in room 308, on the third floor of the GSDM building.

Predoctoral Didactic Lectures Dependent on the academic calendar, participant(s) will attend one session of each of the unique predoctoral courses.

Applicants must do the following to be considered for the program:.

Have a DDS DMD degree, or its equivalent, from an international dental school.

Pay a non-refundable application fee of $100 U.S. (send in with application or ask for link online). Made payable to: GSDMCE.

After being accepted into the program, applicants must do the following before their arrival at GSDM:.

Submit a complete Immunization Record, including TB test results from within the past three months. Forms must be submitted 1 month prior to the start of the program and participants may not start the program until they have been cleared by Occupational Health.

The mission of the Healthy Smiles Sealant Program is to reduce disparities in oral health care for underserved school children in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the second largest school district in Ohio. To achieve this mission, temporary clinics are set up at each CMSD elementary school, where pre-doctoral dental students perform dental exams and apply sealants to children in grades 2, 3 and 6. Lesson plans for teachers are provided monthly to reinforce the message conveyed by the health educators.
