The doctor of philosophy in genetics and developmental biology degree is particularly well suited for students interested in emphasizing plant, animal, microbial (bacterial or fungal), or insect genetics or developmental biology. Students in the program learn research approaches such as genomics, analysis of gene expression, metabolic engineering, functional analyses of genes, evolutionary development, and conservation genetics. Scores from the GRE general test (verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing) must be submitted. The program does not have a specific minimum GRE score, but scores are compared to those of other applicants and considered in conjunction with other qualifications.

DRB Graduate Program Student RetreatIBR Conference Room, November 6, 2019. The JABSOM Developmental and Reproductive Biology (DRB) Graduate Program Students 2019 Retreat took place on November 6 at the UH Manoa Institute of Biogenesis Research (IBR). Thirteen students (7 PhD and 6 MS) presented their work. The topics covered various aspects of reproductive and developmental biology, such as stem cells in reproduction, oogenesis, fertilization, assisted reproduction technologies, embryonic and fetal development, placentation and other aspects of pregnancy, transgenesis, behavior, etc.
