This Certificate was originally designed in collaboration with eCampus within the Center for Excellence in Teaching Learning.

The Certificate of Interdisciplinary Disability Studies in Public Health (Disability Studies) is a 12-credit graduate level course of studies offered entirely online. It uses the 10 Essential Public Health Services as a framework to study the health and well-being of people with disabilities and their families, as well as the communities in which they live, learn, work, and play, and the populations of which they are a part.

The Certificate is comprised of the following 4 courses (3-credits each):.

A 2015 publication in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice highlights the Certificateas a potential resource for other Schools and Programs of Public Health to develop disability-specific courses.

A 2019 publication by Certificate leadership in the Review of Disability Studies investigated outcomes in education and employment of those who took at least one Certificate course.

A chapter on preparing a disability-competent workforce in the 2021 edition of the textbook, Public Health Perspectives on Disability: Science, Social Justice, Ethics, and Beyond, includes the Certificate as a highlighted strategy to add disability content to public health and healthcare education standards Applications received by July 10th are considered for matriculation during the following fall semester and by November 10th for matriculating during the following spring semester.

Decades after the first federal legislation addressing the education of students with special needs, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), critical shortages of special education teachers are reported in most states. Internationally, the need for bringing awareness and education in exceptionality and special education is even pronounced, with a worldwide challenge to ensure that individuals with disabilities have equal access to education.

The fully-online, four-course Certificate in Exceptionality and Disability Studies will provide a foundation in special education to those interested in expanding their understanding of various types of disabilities and ways to address the needs of those students. Candidates should expect to complete the course sequence in one academic year.

Depending on licensure and endorsement requirements in different states, teachers already licensed in general education could use this course sequence to pursue an additional endorsement or credential in special education. Some teachers may also use the coursework to advance their pay scale and expand their knowledge base. Similarly, educators and other practitioners outside the US will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills, and apply current, best practices to international classrooms, and use this certificate to advance their career.

The Certificate in Teaching Bilingual Learners with Disabilities provides post-baccalaureate students with the knowledge and skills in the Professional Standards for Teachers required by the state of Massachusetts to maintain their licensure requirements for serving ELLs with or without special education needs and students with disabilities who are not English learners.

This project-based course facilitates understanding of the integrated historical, theoretical and legal foundations of bilingual and multicultural special education. Participants will examine components of their system, the alignment to legal mandates, ethical practice and recommendations for addressing equity.

The project-based course will address establish prevention practices in the general education classroom that the teacher, ESL teacher, and special educator can address to support preventively bilingual English language learners. Participants will use an ecological assessment perspective of the context of the education environment, culturally responsive practices, and the connection and application of instructional strategies. Data-informed instructional practices and efficient classroom assessment including a focus on screening and progress monitoring will be addressed.

This course includes the assessment of bilingual English learners in the areas of language, culture, and social emotional development. A process for distinguishing between second language indicators and learning disabilities is studied and selected assessments tools are examined and used. Non-discriminatory report writing will be addressed.

This course will address implement high leverage, instructional strategies that can be used across all content areas with a focus on reading comprehension, oracy, and vocabulary. Within the context of a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework, the instruction and intervention design that capitalizes on coherence across the general education, ESL, and special education environments. A critical focus on interventions that highlight the use of active learning, such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, growth mindset, and tiered instruction of oral language development will be highlighted.
