Graduate Certificate Programs in Disability Studies

Equity, inclusion, and understanding are at the heart of Disability Studies. As a powerful challenge to the assumptions people with disabilities, Disability Studies looks at disability as a facet of society and culture, and as an individual experience that is not solely governed by a medical model. The significance of disability is important in all professional and academic contexts such as cultural studies, law, health research and practice, and education.

Our program offers a diverse course selection representing a range of academic departments from English Composition to Rehab Sciences, from Film Studies to Sociology. Understanding the history and experiences of people with disabilities is valuable across career paths in our increasingly diverse society.

Those who identify as disabled and want to gain perspective and engage with the idea of disability.

Those who wish to accurately and fully represent the experiences and perspectives of people with disabilities.

Those who work in any setting and who recognize that disability is a form of diversity and want to be better, informed allies.

Those who want to work in advocacy roles for constituencies that include people with disabilities. Students already enrolled in the College of General Studies or other University programs who want to concentrate on communication skills.

Graduates of this program will be able to:.

Ethically represent people with disabilities in expressive forms such as writing, film and television media, and music.

Identify barriers to access for people with disabilities, including environmental, attitudinal, policy, and social barriers.

Advocate for social, legal, educational, and other concerns impacting populations with disabilities.

Critically examine the intersection of disability and other identity and cultural constructs, such as gender, sexuality, and race.

The Disability Studies certificate requires 18 credits, including one core course, and five elective courses. Courses must be taken from at least three (3) subjects. No than nine (9) total credits (Core Course and two [2] Electives) can come from ENGCMP no than six (6) credits can come from any other single subject code (ENGFLM, GSWS, SOC, etc.).

Credits earned at other accredited educational institutions may be eligible for transfer on a case by case basis.

A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher is required in courses being applied to the certificate.

Five elective courses must be taken from at least three different academic departments (ENGCMP can count as one of these three departments). Courses must be approved for Disability Studies credit. Some approved courses include:.

Online Graduate Certificate of Disability Studies in Public Health.

This Certificate was originally designed in collaboration with eCampus within the Center for Excellence in Teaching Learning.

The Certificate of Interdisciplinary Disability Studies in Public Health (Disability Certificate) is a 12-credit graduate level course of studies offered entirely online. It uses the 10 Essential Public Health Services as a framework to study the health and well-being of people with disabilities and their families, as well as the communities in which they live, learn, work, and play, and the populations of which they are a part.

The Certificate is comprised of the following 4 courses (3-credits each):.

A 2015 publication in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice highlights the Certificate as a potential resource for other Schools and Programs of Public Health to develop disability-specific courses.

A 2019 publication by Certificate leadership in the Review of Disability Studies investigated outcomes in education and employment of those who took at least one Certificate course.

A chapter on preparing a disability-competent workforce in the 2021 edition of the textbook, Public Health Perspectives on Disability: Science, Social Justice, Ethics, and Beyond, includes the Certificate as a highlighted strategy to add disability content to public health and healthcare education standards.

Lifestyles of individuals with developmental disabilities have changed dramatically over the past twenty years as they have moved out of institutions and into community residences. GCC certificate program addresses the skills and knowledge necessary for you to succeed as a human service worker.

The certificate may be completed in one year (full-time) and can be taken separately or as part of the Human Services AAS Degree Program.

The certificate will provide additional education for professionals interested in students with sensory disabilities.

Through focused coursework unique programs and services, collaboration with families, and specialized instructional methods, participants will gain a deeper understanding of effectively work with and support students who have unique sensory learning needs.

The Graduate Certificate in Sensory Disabilities alone does not qualify the holder to apply for a Nebraska teaching endorsement in Deaf Education or Visual Impairment.

Applicants must also fulfill any additional requirements the department specifies at the time of application.

Certificate in Special Education: Exceptionality and Disability Studies.

Decades after the first federal legislation addressing the education of students with special needs, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), critical shortages of special education teachers are reported in most states. Internationally, the need for bringing awareness and education in exceptionality and special education is even pronounced, with a worldwide challenge to ensure that individuals with disabilities have equal access to education.

The fully-online, four-course Certificate in Exceptionality and Disability Studies will provide a foundation in special education to those interested in expanding their understanding of various types of disabilities and ways to address the needs of those students. Candidates should expect to complete the course sequence in one academic year.

Depending on licensure and endorsement requirements in different states, teachers already licensed in general education could use this course sequence to pursue an additional endorsement or credential in special education. Some teachers may also use the coursework to advance their pay scale and expand their knowledge base. Similarly, educators and other practitioners outside the US will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills, and apply current, best practices to international classrooms, and use this certificate to advance their career.

Candidates who are not licensed in general education, but are interested in becoming special educators will have complete the full special educator Master and license program.

The four-course online Certificate in Exceptionality will provide a foundation in Special Education to those interested to expand their understanding of various types of disabilities and ways to address the needs of those students. Practitioners across the US, and around the world, will be able to identify characteristics of students with disabilities, ways to collect and analyze assessment data, as well as utilize this information in order to make instructional planning decisions. By successfully completing this certificate program, candidates will have a firm understanding of ways to accommodate children with high-incidence disabilities and make modifications for children with low-incidence disabilities. Educators can directly apply knowledge and skills to their classrooms.

The curriculum for the Online Certificate in Exceptionality consists of four online courses.

The interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Applied Disability Studies is designed to prepare graduate students from a variety of disciplines to further their understanding of the experience of disability across the lifespan. Students will become familiar with research, advocacy, interventions, and policy that facilitate successful life outcomes for persons with disabilities.

The focus is placed on the application of the field of disability studies to enhance the preparation of graduate students to work in their chosen professional disciplines (e.g., education, healthcare, social work, counseling, gerontology, engineering, web design, psychology, technology, etc.). Through coursework and fieldwork from across Departments and Colleges in the University, students will learn to adopt a person-centered approach in their work with persons with disabilities.

The Graduate Certificate Program in Applied Disability Studies at CSULB has the following goals. The program will:.

Introduce the candidate to concepts, approaches, strategies, and experience of disability across the lifespan.

Promote a person-centered approach to facilitating life outcomes for individuals with disabilities.

Familiarize the candidate with legal, ethical, civil rights, self-determination, technology, and advocacy issues associated with disability.

Implement high-leverage instructional strategies that can be used across all content areas i.

Assess bilingual English learners in language, culture, and social-emotional development using tools and processes to distinguish between second language and learning disability indicators.

The Certificate in Teaching Bilingual Learners with Disabilities provides post-baccalaureate students with the knowledge and skills in the Professional Standards for Teachers required by the state of Massachusetts to maintain their licensure requirements for serving ELLs with or without special education needs and students with disabilities who are not English learners.

Teachers need to work to ensure equitable outcomes for English language learners (ELLs) and those with disabilities.

All these professionals will need additional hours toward any license in serving English learners and students with special education needs across all licensure areas in the state of MA.

Certificate courses that are taken for academic credit may be combined to earn advanced standing in one ofLasell M.Ed. programs.

These courses are also available for credit as an option for teachers who may wish to earn graduate credit. In this case, there are additional assessments and a different pricing structure for these students.

This project-based course facilitates understanding of the integrated historical, theoretical and legal foundations of bilingual and multicultural special education. Participants will examine components of their system, the alignment to legal mandates, ethical practice and recommendations for addressing equity.

The project-based course will address establish prevention practices in the general education classroom that the teacher, ESL teacher, and special educator can address to support preventively bilingual English language learners. Participants will use an ecological assessment perspective of the context of the education environment, culturally responsive practices, and the connection and application of instructional strategies. Data-informed instructional practices and efficient classroom assessment including a focus on screening and progress monitoring will be addressed.

This course includes the assessment of bilingual English learners in the areas of language, culture, and social emotional development. A process for distinguishing between second language indicators and learning disabilities is studied and selected assessments tools are examined and used. Non-discriminatory report writing will be addressed.

This course will address implement high leverage, instructional strategies that can be used across all content areas with a focus on reading comprehension, oracy, and vocabulary. Within the context of a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework, the instruction and intervention design that capitalizes on coherence across the general education, ESL, and special education environments. A critical focus on interventions that highlight the use of active learning, such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, growth mindset, and tiered instruction of oral language development will be highlighted.
