Princeton’s Ph.D. program in East Asian Studies (EAS) has long been recognized as one of the leading graduate programs of its kind in the Western world. At present, they offer doctoral (Ph.D.) training in Chinese and Japanese history and literature, Korean cultural studies, anthropology of East Asia, and in the transnational social and cultural study of contemporary East Asia.

PhD Students in the Humanities and Social Sciences (FAS). In the normal two-year program of study, students take a total of sixteen four-credit courses. All students, however, must graduate with at least eight RSEA-approved four-credit courses. At least six courses used to count toward RSEA course requirements must be courses on East Asian topics, as indicated by course descriptions or approved by the RSEA Committee.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures offers a PhD (MA/MPhil/PhD) program with an interdisciplinary approach to the literature, culture, history, and languages of East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, and Tibet) and a particular emphasis on critical methodology and comparative study. An array of East Asian courses in other areas such as political science, sociology, anthropology, art, law, history, and business is also available, as are interdisciplinary programs with the departments of Religion and History and the Interdepartmental Committee in Comparative Literature and Society.

The cross-disciplinary Ph.D. program in East Asian Languages and Civilizations is designed to train graduate students who can teach and conduct independent research in a variety of humanistic disciplines using Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Mongolian, or occasionally other languages of East Asia. Our region is defined roughly as China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and Inner Asia.

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences of Johns Hopkins University offers programs leading to the doctoral degree for East Asian specialists in a wide range of disciplines. The Program in East Asian Studies does not itself offer a graduate degree program, but graduate students affiliated with the program are housed in the following departments: history, sociology, political science, history of science and technology, and history of medicine (through the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine).

The Department of East Asian Studies offers Brown students a window into the worlds of East Asia, a region that has emerged, over the course of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, both as a major site of geopolitical power and as a vital node of economic development within the global economy. The graduate community in recent years has included Ph.D. students whose work focuses on East Asia in American Studies, Anthropology, Comparative Literature, History, History of Art and Architecture, Religious Studies, and Sociology.

East Asian Languages and Cultures offers graduate students advanced training in the languages, literatures, and cultures of China, Japan, and Korea. The students have combined approaches from cultural studies, literature, linguistics, film and media studies, and other disciplines to broaden traditional paradigms and provide a different perspective on the reading of the texts in their fields. By allowing a greater degree of flexibility, the interdisciplinary approach enhances students' research skills and enables them to become well-rounded scholars. Appropriate cross-registration with other departments allows students to enhance their theoretical and methodological training.

Normally, at least three years of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean at the college level and substantial course work in Asian culture are required to enter the Ph.D. program.

Study involves not only East Asia recent and increasingly vital role on the world scene, but also an examination of the complex and profound features of its long history. The focus is on the humanistic traditions, with particular emphasis on literature, history, religion, society, and cultural studies. The program stresses advanced language training as the foundation for research on East Asian cultures.
